When playing in a cross wind, lets say left to right at 14mph, how do you use the spreadsheet on these kinds of shots? and how much do you aim to the left to account for the wind?
Example lets say you are 157 yards out and the green is +18 with a 14mph left to right cross wind. how would you play this shot?

Example lets say you are 157 yards out and the green is +18 with a 14mph left to right cross wind. how would you play this shot? one of those shots where you just have to hit it a few times to figure it out - off the top of my head I would do this for med-firm greens 153 base +6 for elevation =159 - then playing in a 14mph crosswind means you'll have to aim a fair bit into it so that will add yards as the distance your ball travels is increasing. So I would play a shot in the 162-164 range and hope I guessed right!

what is the 153 base? and how much do you aim into the wind? how many clicks? in that scenario?

what is the 153 base? and how much do you aim into the wind? how many clicks? in that scenario? 153 base is the distance to the pin according to the game, before you do any outside calculations. As for clicks, basically doyley was saying that it takes some experimenting to figure out how far to aim. Many (including me) do this by feel. Basically - hit enough shots into a 14mph cross wind and you start to figure out how far right to aim it with various clubs - as the wind affects each club differently due to changing lofts. Also keep in mind that the lie of your ball greatly affects this. For instance, if you have an uphill lie with a R to L wind, then you better aim even more to the right than normal since the lie + wind will send your ball even further left than just wind alone. Hope this helps... Nate

The distance he was asking was 157, not 153. Also, I have read on here many times that uphill/downhill lies do not affect the shots.

You are correct, looks like Doyley just misquoted the distance as 153. He meant to say 157 - I'm pretty certain on that. Regardless the "base" distance is what the game tells you. As for lies it depends on the axis you're talking about. I was unclear in my language -- uphill/downhill do not affect your shot path (as in, your shot does not gain or lose loft). However, sidehill lies DO affect your shot. I meant to say sidehill the first go around. If the ball is above or below your feet, that will certainly affect how it comes off your club in this game. And the only real way to learn is by feel!

Yeah, sidehill definitely makes a difference, a big one in some cases.

Isn't 153 taking into account the roll on the green? The maximum I do is twice as many clicks as side wind, so for 14MPH I do 28 clicks. I would do less clicks depending the club. It's more difficult with diagonal wind.

Sorry guys, forgot to check back on the thread. Yes my 153 was accounting for 4 yards roll (3 would probably work too at that distance). If I start my calculations right at the pin distance then it's going to fly to the pin and roll past. Got to plan to land and roll.

On approach, is it possible to tell how far a pin is "on" by using the putting grid?

I've heard around a yard to 1 1/2 yards per grid square.

The boxes are 1 meter.

Any tips on managing winds blowing "diagonal"?
(like "/" or "\" )
