Hello, My friend is in his second semester of German. I have always been fascinated with Germany, and I would love to make this trip and test my skills and have an experience that will last me the rest of my life. The problem is I have no idea where to start. Considering costs, I would like to focus my time in a specific region, such as Southern Germany or Northern Germany. I have never traveled before on a scale like this and have no idea what to expect. Would anybody be able to give us some good advice, and/or provide us with numbers of what we are to expect cost-wise and maybe provide us with some sort of itinerary? Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you

I'm not from Germany, but coming from Austria I might still be able to help you at least a bit...
So how long do you plan to stay/travel?

If you are pointing her towards the Oktoberfest... that is massively overrated (and just expensive as hell)!

First thing I would ask before giving any advice would be: Apart from the language. What would you like to do/experience on a trip to Germany? It's not as big as the US, but depending on your interests it's big enough to make a difference. Do you like hiking or alcoholic beverages? Is history such as ww2 something of interest or do you want to feast in architecture or art? Maybe you want to play golf or go skiing? If you know any of this then I think many of us Europeans and guys like edi_vedder in particular can give you some good tips.

I am not sure what is going on with the guy who created this thread but he comes here every month looking for advice for his holiday. In March he said he was going to Italy and came here looking for advice. He then posted in April about going to Spain and I sent him a pm giving him some information that may have been useful to him. He never responded and then came back in June now saying that he was going to Germany, and now again one month later, he is again looking to plan a German holiday. All very strange, I wonder where he will be going next month?
