I do not watch golf regularly. I pay attention in sports bars, follow some player's names but in general I only play in real life and TGC.
However, I got some time to watch the finish at Muirfield the other day and I saw two stats that I'm curious about and would like some input.
Scrambling: As McGirt (Sp?) was finishing up on 18, they flashed that he was 7/7 scrambling. Is scrambling defined as making it from a hazard/rough back onto the fairway/green or is it finding a hazard and then finishing at Par for the hole?
Over/Under: I'm not sure what this Stat was called so I can't look it up, but at one point they showed Dustin Johnson's lifetime over/under for different holes, broken down into Par 3's, 4's, 5's. I was amazed because he was positive on 3's and 4'S (100 ish and 200ish respectively), but for par 5's he was under by like 800, which to me means he has made his living scoring really well on Par 5's. My only question with this is, Is this normal? Will most Golfers have Stat lines that look this way?
Just curious. Any help yall could give would be great.

Scrambling is just making par when missing the green.
Almost all pros are over par on the par threes (longest approaches on average) and way below on the par fives (plays like par 4.5). Dustin is a bit extreme due to his length coupled with just average short irons.

Non regulation pars can be thrilling to pull off. Watch Seve Ballesteros highlights of saving par. Unreal.

Is it about right that par 3's are deemed easier for amateurs but harder for pros?

Is it about right that par 3's are deemed easier for amateurs but harder for pros? That would depend. I'd say Par 3s are easier for youth amatures but Par 5s are easier for adults judging by personal experience. I simply did not have the length in my shots to do well on Par 5s, but I could reach most par 3s.

Is it about right that par 3's are deemed easier for amateurs but harder for pros? Yep - simple reason is that pros gain on the course for every shot while amateurs lose to the course with every shot.
Par 3s have fewer opportunities to lose strokes for the ams but fewer opportunites to gain for the pro and vice versa.
Not talking high level ams here, obviously. Better to say handicap golfers maybe.
