Keep hearing about the red brush trick for creating larger collars of rough around fairway bunkers but never heard an explanation of how this works.
Probably the only one left who doesn't know, but some advice would be appreciated.
To be honest I hardly ever use the red brushes anymore as they don't seem to do what they should. For instance if I try to raise an area of land when I click to place it, it just sinks back to the original level.
Anyone else having red brush issues or am I just missing something ?

Red brushes affect the raising of the water line not the actual land itself place a small round bunker in the fairway take a small round red brush and lower it until you see water the deeper you go the bigger the rough gets around your bunker

Thanks for your reply.
I made the collar of rough trick work by using the red flatten brush ( doesn't work with the raise brush ).
Still don't really understand the red brushes though, seems as though you can only physically sculpt land which hasn't already been sculpted with the blue brushes.
Not sure what you mean about raising the water line, as far as I am aware the water line in the game is fixed unless that altered without me realising.

You asked how, you got how, why is anybody's guess.

Red brushes only modify the base terrain. Once terrain has been modified by the blue brushes, the red brush doesn't affect the elevation at all.
But, if the base terrain is below the water line, you can't lay fairway or green surface on it, even if the elevation has been raised above the water line using the blue brushes. That's why flattening the modified terrain to below the water line with the red brush causes the fairway to be deleted.
I wish there was a tool to delete surfaces that would make it easier to delete small sections of fairway, rough or whatever, but that tool doesn't exist yet.

Thanks Erixon, I very nearly understood that but then my brain exploded . Seriously though apart from pulling a few tricks to overcome some quirks in the designer I can't see the point in the red brushes at all. I do sort of get what you said, it was a good explanation.

Okay, I don't have anymore tips, but I have a question related to red brushes. I play on a of with the keyboard and mouse, and I used to be able to use the red brush, but ever since sometime late last year they made it so you had to change it using a button... That I don't have. How can I access it? I have an XBox controller but I can't figure out how to get it to work... It doesn't do anything. Basically what I'm asking is How can I access the red brush from the keyboard? If I can't, why isn't my controller working? Thanks in advance!

Red brushes are available using kb/mouse. From the main menu, choose TERRAIN -- SCULPT.
