Since tax season has been favourable this year, it seems I have $500 give or take to upgrade my PC.
I will be upgrading Motherboard, Processor, and RAM.
Any of you fellow PC tweakers care to make some suggestions?
I'll be posting my potential choices for review as well. I don't get to do this very often so I want to get it right.
Any and all assistance is welcome.

And to specify
I only buy Intel processors. Core i5 seems to be the only one in my price range at the moment. The other two components I'm flexible on.

I just did a bit of an upgrade. here's what I used:
Intel Core i5-6600K 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 1151 91W MSI Z170A TOMAHAWK AC LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000)
Was very reasonable price/performance combo I think.

Thanks Brian. How are you liking the performance so far? Do you have an SSD at all? I was thinking I might add that to the list to put the O/S on.

I have a couple SSD's actually. I would HIGHLY recommend getting an SSD and keeping the OS all by itself. Just make sure you have enough room for updates and the like. I remember the first time I did that I ran out of room and couldn't upgrade when the time came. Ruh roh. I have one SSD for os, one for games and stuff and then a SATA drive for all the pictures, docs and crap that one keeps.

as for performance I have enjoyed it. Boots quickly and runs everything perfectly. I wasn't looking to massively upgrade as I was running things ok with my old rig but it was time for a change. I haven't had a chance to put it through it's paces on a lot of heavy work yet.
I will say about the motherboard that the onboard Wifi and Bluetooth are pretty freaking quick and a very nice little addition (though the antenna are a freaking pain to install)
one other thing, I haven't messed with overclocking at all yet but my understanding is this combo should be able to get a pretty nice boost.

I am getting a little excited, lol. Do you think a 60gb ssd would be enough for the OS + updates?

60 should be ok but you'll want to make sure downloads and stuff are automatically pointed elsewhere. I think the 64 bit version of Windows 10 is 20gig to start with and the additions add up quickly. I don't like to skimp on size any more. You can get 480 gig for like a 150 bucks now. www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?bop=And&Submit=DailyDeals&N=40000636I think you'd be ok though.

Probably should have mentioned the I was talking $500 in Canadian funds, which at this point is about 100 USD. My purchasing power not as good.
So here's what I'm tentatively looking at:
Mobo - Asus Z170 Pro Gaming $229.99 CPU - Core i5 6500 $269.00 RAM - Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x8GB $94.99 SSD - Kingston HyperX Fury 240GB $104.99
698.97 +tax
Obviously going above my budget but I'm squeezing a bit more out to get the SSD.

Picked up a Core i5-6600k for $235 US.
Seemed like a good deal. 1/3 of the way there.

It's on like Donkey Kong.
First three things I did when I had it all set up were
Install video driver Install steam Install the golf club.
Holy hell is it fast. I just might get into designing again because I realize now how laggy the gncd was.
I couldn't believe the difference in how fast the game transitioned between shots and how easy it was to zoom around.
Unfortunately my spending didn't get past the attention of my "financial advisor" and the SSD will have to wait but a huge difference noticed so far.
And also awesome is the impending download and playing of FO4!
Going to be hard to work today.
