I was wondering if there was a technique that some of you guys use on approach shots (or even long par 3's) when using the 5W or 3W to keep the ball on the green when there is limited room in front of the green because of a bunker or other obstruction. A higher loft doesn't seem to have much of an effect (at least for me).

I know you say the higher loft doesnt work, but in my experience it does. Im talking 2-3 bars up. Seems like it takes quiet a bit of the roll out. Also depends on the firmness of the greens. Firm greens are almost impossible to stick with the longer shots.

Practice and see. It also says 100% all the way up but i swear i think it takes some yards off also.

If there's not a significant head wind and enough green to work with, I will sometimes de-loft a 3 iron and run the ball up to the hole. You can even get more of a roll by bouncing on the fairway or fringe in front of the green. Of course where you want the ball to land depends on wind, fairway/ green firmness, elevation changes. But if you experiment you can get a good feel for it.

I usually just close my eyes and pray. Its not a bulletproof system, but on occasion it seems to work.
