The following was pulled from this week's TGCT Digest
TGC Tours has become a thriving community full of competition, growth, and camaraderie. It strives to mimic the USGA and R&A calendar, events and rules as much as possible. One thing the professional golf tours do right is enhance their overall communities. TGC Tours looks to take on the challenge of giving back to our “ real world” communities in a similar way. TGC Tours Gives Back is a long term strategy to hold a small handful of charity events each year generally in conjunction with TGCT events. Many existing PGA, Euro, and Web events are already aligned with amazing charity organizations that would work well under the TGC Tours Gives Back umbrella (St Jude Classic for instance). These special events on TGC Tours will generally happen once every 3 or 4 months as we work to add a real world purpose for our vibrant online community.
I know many of us have asked Tim (or Scott, or others) what we can do financially or time wise to help the TGCT continue to prosper. The time and money put into the site and the experience that we all share and enjoy is something most participants recognize. While the administration has been unwilling to take cash for an experience that most of us believe has value, TGC Tours Gives Back provides an outlet to turn that focus towards some great charities and better our real world communities. To kick off the TGCT Gives Back initiative we have two upcoming events on the schedule.
Week 7 will feature a solo event outside the weekly tour stops, supporting Voyager Expeditions. This charity event will feature support for a group doing outreach and providing food to the people of Honduras. Honduras is considered a 4th world country with many families unable to provide the daily needs we each often take for granted (shelter, food, water, etc). Our own Administrator Jeff Reese (SmilingGoats) will be using his own money to fly to Honduras and help provide some of these basic needs. $10 US is enough money to provide beans and/or rice for a small family for a month. Any donation amount can have a direct impact in the life of someone in La Colonia, Honduras.

Week 8 will be our quarterly signature event, centered around the Autism Speaks Charity Championship on the Challenge Circuit tour. We encourage all members to participate in this event in-game, although only CC members will submit scores on the site. Autism Speaks is very excited about our event and has provided some information and links for donation. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability with signs typically appearing during early childhood. It can affect a person’s ability to communicate, and interact with others. Increased awareness and early diagnosis/intervention and access to appropriate services/supports lead to significantly improved outcomes. Currently it is estimated that over 1% of children worldwide have some form of autism with several countries (the US included) having double that many cases. Autism Speaks can provide therapy options for those affected, as well as global bio-medical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a possible cure for autism. They strive to raise public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society, and work to bring hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder.
Jason Wert (Irving R Levine) has created a special course (Eli's Course) for this event. Many of the unique features, trees, and pins for this event were configured by Jason's autistic son Eli. He is very excited about the upcoming event on "his course". Here is Eli picking the weather for his signature event.
For more information about the positive effects attention, technology and therapy can have, please read Jason's blog on the effects something as simple as an I-Pad can have on an autistic child. Jason added, "groups like Autism Speaks help provide items like this to families that can't afford it to help the kids communicate. They raise awareness for people who don't understand the disease. I'm just humbled you guys would even name the tourney for it. Eli is so happy about it."
TGC Tours Gives Back is not only about financial donations. Certainly these two events as well as future events may touch each of us in unique ways. Opportunities will exist around each of these events that go well beyond donations. In conjunction with the Autism Speaks Charity Championship (and future events) we will be inviting each of you to use social media to get the word out about Autism Speaks and TGC Tours Gives Back. We will provide a couple of suggested Tweets that can be posted to your Twitter accounts. Awareness can be a powerful weapon in providing information about the issues and needs of our charity partners. More information on these events and on TGC Tours Gives Back will be posted on the site in the coming days. Any involvement in TGC Tours Gives Back is completely voluntary.
We hope that this further alignment with the real world golf model unites our community in a positive direction. Our goal is not to pressure or make anyone feel uncomfortable, but rather to better the community - both online and real world.
