My big problem is I have no idea how far the ball is going to go once it hits the green. Close approaches are all luck for me. I am always aiming to drop the ball at the pin. I have trouble playing to overhit the ball and have it roll back where this is possible.

Hey meunier
This is a whole big tin of worms and im no expert as im just getting my feet under the table also. I will say you will get used to it, its just a matter of practice and learning from mistakes, but to start have you looked at DOYLEYS HINTS AND TIPS? because there are so many factors to take into account and they all calculate depending on whats going on on each hole like: Wind strength and direction, fairway hardness and elavation, and same with greens to check greens speeds select your putter and look at the top right on the HUD the lower the number the slower the green i think it ranges from 130 something to 190 something and to check fairways look at the bounce of the ball when you drive it higher the bounce the harder it is, if you find your ball is rolling away too much try lofting up it will stop the ball quicker but beware the higher the loft the more the ball is effected by the wind.
Hope this helps

It really all depends on the firmness off the fairways and greens if it's really firm I've had balls roll 40yards, you have to miss the fringe on firm greens as if you hit it you can usually say goodbye to the ball landing near the pin, the best advice I can give you is that loft is your friend try and use it as much as possible just practice pal you will get it.

As a guy who has only been playing a few months, I agree with the above and you just have to take your lumps and practice and learn as much as you can. You will start to see that you might only have 180 yards left to a pin but you calculate to say 174 because you know its going to roll. Like they said, it all depends on the firmness and wind but you will start getting the hang of it more and more you play rounds. I have played a ton of different golf games the past 17 years and I am really thinking this is the best so far! I think the TGC and HB have given us something to really enjoy. Stick with it and you will see better results in the near future.

Doyley's tipps are really useful. You might also play with ghosts and watch how far their balls are rolling on the green.

I too experienced the same type of frustration at first, but trust me, it will all eventually click and you'll start dialing in those shots once you get use to distances and what club to use. You can't play too many practice rounds.

Depends on many factors. What club you're hitting, firmness of greens, wind direction, slope of green. Watching ghost balls reactions is the best way to see how far they are rolling, and that dreaded word....... Practice

I tried playing back from the hole right away and got some stuff wrong but it went really well. I went from -4, E on my first 2 rounds at Pebble to -17 by the end of the tournament. That will probably still not be enough to avoid a strike as there are people on pace to shoot a -48..
