I wish it was all that easy, my friend.

So I live near Lake Simcoe (just north of Barrie). Nice area but not necessarily the nicest in my opinion). Basically Barrie has largely become a bedroom community for Toronto). About an hour north of Barrie, it is very beautiful (Muskoka, Parry Sound) but the drawback is there are few jobs as it is largely a tourist area in the summertime.
Over my life, I have lived in other places around Ontario as well, Ottawa, Sudbury, Kitchener/Waterloo, North Bay and several smaller areas. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend living in Ottawa. It is a beautiful city, and, because it is our nation's capital, there is an insanely disproportionate amount of tax money spent on festivals, beautifying, etc. I had to move from Ottawa due to my wife's work but basically you had to pry me away. It is a city, so you get "city stuff" like transit, events, shopping, etc., but it is a small city. Within minutes you can be in the Gatineaus away from the hustle and bustle. You are a short trip to Montreal if there are any "big city" experiences you need. Real estate prices are climbing but if you are looking to save, buy in Gatineau (though you are subjected to bridge traffic if you work in Ottawa). If I could move to any city in eastern Canada, it would be Ottawa. Of course if I had a few million lying around my choices would be Vancouver or Victoria.
Just my two cent.

Hey Tom, thank you for sharing your experiences. I'll definitely take them into consideration if needed.
