it can look as crazy as you want it, but i want a course to play realistic, if its a tour course. if i want to play an actual fantasy course, ill choose one for a solo round.
my biggest gripe with many courses, is the greens. some make their courses look great, play super easy until you get to the greens, then its slope ditty slope with pins in places you would rarely see irl given the course conditions. then we have designers to dont give two shits about usga recommendations.
so imo, as it stands, many courses are ass backwards, the look realistic, but play like garbage, especially on the greens. i can't tell you how many times ive hit a very good shot only to have very unrealistic results from it.
from hitting green center from 200 yards out, watch it roll almost off the back of the green, only to make a u-turn and roll 20 yards backwards off the front of the green (backspin not the cause) to pitching from 45 yards out and landing softly just a few feet away from the pin, and watch it roll down the front side of the green to putting from 12 feet away, with the aiming marker just 3 feet in front of me, and then proceed to putting it off the other side of the green
all three of the above are tour courses.
i guess some designers just do not know how to make a course difficult any other way than to trick greens out like there is no tomorrow.
id rather miss a fairway, hit from the deep stuff and try to make a gir and save par, than to be 3 putting from less than 15feet on first putt.

I think a bit of variety is good. I like to change it up a bit. For the most part, I love realistic and simulation type games. But on the other hand, I really liked playing Copperhead Canyon, Wallaby Creek, and Black Rock Cove on the Tiger games of the early 2000s. But I agree with what others have said.. If it's on tour, and selected for a tournament, it should be as real as it could possibly be.
