I try to remember to call it the Open Championship. But for those of us who grew up in the States, it was popularly referred to as the British Open. I've seen more than a few comments from our friends in England chastising (playfully) those that have referred to it as the British Open. We can't help it. That's what we heard it referred to by the media and yes, the players, as we grew up. Just bear with us...we mean no offense.

Well I think the big networks have even referred to it as The British Open in the past. So yeah I know I grew up calling it The British Open. Either way, it's a big deal on the calendar every year.

Kind of hard to call it the Open when we have an Open of our own.

Always liked calling it the British, it puts that extra stamp on it. You know you're playing a historic links course with wind and rain. The Open seems a little generic, if that makes sense.

It's called the U.S. Open. So nothing wrong with the British Open.

I'm British and I call it either... I guess we like having the claim on the word 'The' on its own so would deffo pull someone up referring to the US Open as The Open.... Not that it's fair (and possibly isn't misuse without also using the word Championship). I would probably be peeved if I was from the US , it's almost like trying to claim copyright on the word edge for example... No one would do that :-D
