Hey everyone,
Aberdeen Mining Co. is my entry in the National Treasure Contest. Tom Doak was my architect and I'm so thankful to the judges for coming up with such a fun idea because the whole experience was a lot of fun. With a little knowledge of Doak, I plowed deep (a lot of podcasts out there). I learned of his opinionated and arrogant past but it the end found an honest good person who was and is an amazing architect. I fell in love with his style because it emulated what I always believed. The belief that a course's playability should be of utmost importance and that a course should adapt to it's environment and not the other way around. During this contest I can proudly say Tom Doak became my favorite architect and I hope this course can do a small justice towards him.
The plot is located in Aberdeen, NC on the outskirts of Pinehurst. The course was mostly inspired by Sedge Valley and Pinehurst #10 but many others as well. A course with a ton of slope, within the large fairways and closely mown green surroundings, it can be a difficult test for the better player while still allowing the lesser player the opportunity to score. Sweeping valleys left over by the previous mining site produce a plethora of humps and bumps that are throughout the course. In Doak fashion these aren't sculpting down but put into play, with the result hopefully being something Doak would give a 10.
This is my first real contest so it's probably doomed, but I had fun and I hope those that play the course can see that. Thank you to all the judges and organizers this was a blast. Enjoy the course, I'll see ya out there!
