Now published.
This is my RCR of one of the world's finest 9 hole courses, designed by architect Tom Simpson, opened for play in 1913. The Valliere came 14 years before the 18-hole Grand Parcours (which I will be publishing soon).
This very short 9-holer has plenty of quirks. The greensites are legendary and wild; I've left these largely as they come. You can play up to fast speeds and still have fun. They are a bit crazy golf at times. The course hasn't really be lengthened since its opening, and hence it is built for 250 yard not 350 yard drives. I strongly recommend playing with hybrids and irons only, no woods or drivers. Having said that I had a go with driver and had a blast...
Valliere routing
The Morfontaine complex. Valliere at the bottom.
Teeshot on hole 1, 8th green beside tee. Semiblind teeshot with an iron.
1st and 2nd greens
The second green; the first of three outstanding short par 3s.
Wildly sloping 3rd green. Great fun hitting pitches into this and running the ball down to the hole. Except the back right pin which is a bastard.
Maybe the signature hole, steeply downhill par 3 4th. Massive ridge in the middle of the green. Get on the wrong side of that and par is pretty much impossible.
Looking back from behind 4th green.
Brilliant short par 5 5th. Take an iron of the tee so you can play a ground game approach into a steep punchbowl. Driver ruins this hole; you'll be hitting a wedge (probably from a bunker) in.
6th is another short par 5; the most straightforward hole with a pretty flat green.
350 yard 7th; tricky angled fairway, and another steeply sloping green.
8th tee shot. A third par 5 in 4 holes. Iron off the tee to the front fairway.
Leaving a delightful approach into a heavily tiered green. The pins on the elevated tiers are nasty.
Short and pretty closing hole. Wish I could do the clubhouse more justice, the IRL building is gorgeous.
The 9th green from the clubhouse verandah.
It's been a very chilled-out delight to make this. Obviously won't be submitting to database as it's a 9-holer, and actually quite refreshing not having to worry about Tour Worthy or not! I've had so much fun playtesting. Would be an incredible place to visit, but it is a notoriously exclusive club. It is located just outside Paris, right next door to Parc Asterix! Anyone been there IRL?
