This project has been a LONG time in the making. Basically since the countryside theme came out, I figured that it would be the best theme to do an inland style links venue. It took a lot of effort just to get the terrain relatively close to how I wanted it. Still not quite there, but at least serviceable. Best guess I'd say this course is 55-65% done? I'm moving at a snail's pace, only really working on it for a few hours each weekend. Pics provided below are subject to (and will change) as the build progresses.
Basic Facts:
Braebyrne Golf Links, set in the fictional village of Tallyrand, England, UK.
Par 71 (4-11-3)
Length 6600-6900 depending on set up
Firmness: medium-firm
Speed: 12 O'clock
Style - traditional inland links, in the family of Prestwick, Birkdale
Gripes: Need real sod-faced pot bunkers, need more whispy grasses that are visible at longer draw distances, need more buildings that look residential.
This course is supposed to be about medium difficulty. Best players will tear this up. For them, I will STRONGLY recommend (and really for anyone) that this course is played with no scout cam and no green grid. There are lots of delightful little blind shots, quips, and quirks. The bunkers are placed to mess with the golfer's depth perception from ground level, which is killed by scout cam. The fairways are large, undulating, and encourage thought off the tee. 14 fairways hit is possible, but being on the right or left of them, long or short, will give you better angles to certain pins and flatter or more undulating lies depending on where you need to attack. There is no light rough...just fairway to heavy stuff to heavier stuff.
The greens are also large, have run-ups, and are VERY undulating. The speed of the greens is slow enough to allow for this. Lots of extreme breaking putts, massive uphillers and downhillers, really the greens are this course's biggest defense.
Plan is to finish it by August or September.
Okay, now the part you care about -- PHOTOS!
