links to me was always BIG slopes with SLOWER greens. Not soft...but slower.
I'd love to see some folks throw out some links designs for this one. I know Biggins has one in the works he's excited about. Major High has a fun one coming in the next couple of days you'll like too.

As good as majors looks it doesn't suit the British open I'm afraid. It looks more like and American links with those big wavey bunkers, British links are littered with pot bunkers and small difficult bunkers.

I'd agree with that... Im' just happy to have more linksy style tracks coming up! I would love the updated links theme to be out and about before this happens...but I doubt it.

I'm getting a big links feeling at the moment as well, going to build one myself.

The muirfield one by Yeltzman plays quite linksy and could be firmed up a hair.
Would be really nice with one that tests the ground game - running the ball through swales and over humps to get close.
I tried some concepts for that on my prototype links but dont have the time and motivation to churn out a full course.

Because I can't seem to get my latest project looking like I want it to (I want the landscape, sand colour and natural rough colouring of desert with the fairways, greens and foliage of delta) I am making a start on a links course as well

Just a fool about in links theme and what they really need is to be able to plant more of those yellow bushes that are still present when you have no trees. I may go ahead and try and start a links course although I would prefer if the land wasnt completely surrounded by water and maybe one or two edges were joined to the backdrop so it looks as if it was still part of the mainland.

Remember, the main reason The Open greens are slower than the other majors is purely because of the wind at the links courses. If the winds get up, which they do a LOT, the balls would never stay on the green. Not a problem we have with TGC which means there's not much reason why we shouldn't have fairly fast greens for The Open.

I should add that if the unifying wind is here by then, links golf there should definitely be HIGH HIGH HIGH wind with maybe a day with medium winds. Links golf at its best, baby!

The problem with TGC and links golf is that balls don't roll out enough in the fairways, and then they roll out too much on the green. You have to hit a shot perfectly to land it in the fairway, roll out a little, and then barely trickle on to the green where it then races off. I feel that's honestly one of the most unrealistic parts of this game as lower shots can run out much more short of the green and they don't race off once they do trickle on to the green. I feel like that makes it tough to be effective with a links course and firmness, but we'll see.

Not a problem we have with TGC which means there's not much reason why we shouldn't have fairly fast greens for The Open. That's one reason yes, but another is that they have firm ground with big contours. Big contouring won't work with fast greens. Needs to be medium (10 on the stimp) maximum really. Also, if you have a big tail wind it will be hard to hold the greens with fast greens. I read an article on Royal County Down last week. It said they have to keep watering the greens to slow them down because they were expecting huge winds. Think they usually have 10.5 speed but because of expected winds of 20mph+ wanted them at 10 highest. Only one green runs front to back there and is a 130 yard par 3 with a bunker guarding the front so obviously this green is hard to hold, with a 20mph+ tail wind anything above medium makes it impossible.

Decided to go for it and try and lay out st andrews on the map with the yardages given on website and then tweak green and tee box positions. Got good old google earth pro to get my measurements for the swilcan burn and it looks decent(see attached picture for burn) Will have to start afresh as not all the holes will fit on the landmass from where I started. Completed the burn once so shouldn't be too hard again. The only downside is their is a bridge that would be perfect for the swilcan bridge but its just far too small and wants to sit right down at water level so I used the other stone bridge. It will be called Spirit of St. Andrews since it wont be exact.
