Being from the UK (and the fact I fudged up qualifying for the US Open) the real Open is the British Open to me ;-)
Anyways, will there be a qualifier for this the same as the US? And what course will we play? I've played on terrific Murfield and Royal Troon courses. Is there a good St Andrews out as obviously that would be first choice? Please tell me it's gonna be on a links course aswell? With the wind update out it will be sacrilegious not to be. It's all redundunt as I won't qualify anyways but just curious to know :-)

I was wondering this aswell. Definitely needs to be a links course or else what's the point.
Are there any good St Andrews recreations? I was wanting to start one but lacking sufficient information to give it justice.

Haven't found any really good st. Andrews. Have to play firm and fast, and sculpting the greens to play good for that and remain realistic must be really difficult.
Swindon downs (open) would have been a really good fantasy candidate....

I would say St Andrews in tournament conditions is firm and medium speed greens tops surely?

Just read that it's 10.5 on the stimpmeter. Medium pace surely?

You are right - and that would play better with the slopes on the greens. Can I get out of this by modifying to "Fast for a links"?

Swindon downs (open) would have been a really good fantasy candidate.... I would agree with using that. A proper links course would normally play hard and fast , as the course has excellent drainage, due to the underlying sand. I don't think that St. Andrews is softened up for tournaments but don't count me on that.

Then again just read that links course tend not to go over 10ft on the stimpmeter. I will take that back aswell and say a high medium green speed would do

PGA greens usually stimp at around 12. For Majors, such as the U.S. Open, they can get up to 15+.
I think the European Tour typically features slower speeds than their U.S. counterparts.

I've always looked at it as slow = 8, slow-med = 9, medium = 10 etc. I think with St Andrews you cant go above medium personally because of all the contours.

I had only heard of the stimpmeter when it was mentioned earlier. Was curious so started reading articles. Seems as different places have different ideas of slow/medium/fast green speeds.

I hope it's a links course on the links theme.

Just thought i would have a look to see if there were any st. andrews courses on TGC and there are plenty. Tried St. Andrews Black Tees and is nothing like st andrews. Too soft, too slow, way too many straight edges. so many double fairways. some greens are so flat where some are too sloped. Got to the 12th hole and there is this huge well in the 12th green. got stuck in it and even with my putter pulled all the way back there is no making it out.
It will probalbly be a fantasy course for this one. Cannot see me trying all the st andrews courses and cant see me doing it justice in the course creator either. Just not enough information on the course, or if there is i cannot find it haha

The stimp doesn't matter if the weather is forecast to be hot, the greens will be frightening.
