The first set of golf courses I did(/am still doing) were LIDAR recreations for local PNW courses. I decided to look around for area that had LIDAR data that DON'T have golf courses so give me a starting point and experiment a bunch with routing and hole contruction. It didn't take me long to land on Point Defiance Park in my Home town of Tacoma Washington.
There should never, and will never, be a golf course here, but man it would be a cool plot of land to play with
For better or worse, the only theme that covers it in enough trees with 100% auto-gen is Swiss, so while we don't get Rainier in the back ground, we do get a bunch of bigger mountains
Sans trees, it has some fun land movement, and no shortage of cliff faces to route holes along.
Because I wanted to maintain the on-the coast look, took away all the trees and started designing it as a Links courses, and was even experimenting with making it a reversible course, but I admittedly it might be beyond my skill set and something to be returned to.
So I went back to trying to make it look "good enough" in the Swiss style, and I discovered a trick to extending the visual boundaries out even farther (tricked the game into letting me lower the map edges a lot), making it feel a BIT more like a chunk of land jutting out into the Puget Sound. I'll be starting what I guess will be a "parkland" style course that carves in and out of the trees, featuring some obvious cliffs.
If anyone has any interest in the Raw LIDAR map to play with, let me know. Would love to see someone with more skill than me build a course where it should never/will never be. I'll be playing with it for a while,
The 760-acre (3.1 km2) park includes Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, the Rose Garden, Rhododendron Garden, beaches, trails, a boardwalk, a boathouse, a Washington State Ferries ferry dock for the Point Defiance-Tahlequah route to Vashon Island, Fort Nisqually, an off-leash dog park, and most notably about 400 acres of old-growth forest. It receives more than three million visitors every year. Point Defiance Park is maintained and operated by Metro Parks Tacoma. - Wikipeida
