My Major Design Contest Course, Ontario Lowlands, has been published. I tried to make the stands and crowds work but for some reason I just like it better in it's natural state, so I'm sticking with it for better or worse. Here it is in all it's glory!
Desired Conditions
Wind: Med or High out of the South
Tees: Black
Pins: 3 or 4 I like equally, but all pins are balanced
Course Routing
Water hazards abound, more than I usually like to include. The marshy lowlands come into play on several holes.
Hole 1 - Carry
This hole is going to be loved or hated. Depending on wind this will require a heroic shot to clear the creek off the tee. The best position for the green is left side of the fairway to have a look at every pin, but the easiest carry is on the right, which leads to a semi-blind approach.
Hole 3 - Hit & Run
Hole 3 is the longest par 3 on the course. The green is canted heavily from left to right and the water isn't really in play. A shelf on the back left of the green feeds many of the pins but when the pin is on top of the shelf it requires an exacting and more lofted shot.
Hole 5 - Serpentine
The longest par 5 on the course plays just under 600 yards but can be reached in two with confident shots. The fairway will kick well placed shots onto the putting surface but being on the proper level is just as important.
Hole 6 - Nook
The drive pinches a bit short of 300 from the tips by a row of bunkers on the right. However the best angle to the tucked green is on the left near the creek and lake that frame the hole's left boundary.
Hole 11 - Peninsula
This diminutive hole is all in front of you. Subtle breaks in the green make puts from different sectors of the green difficult to sink. Picking the correct club in high winds is paramount.
Hole 13 - Rock & Hard Place
The most exacting drive on the course. Right is water and left is a low side that is blocked out by the treeline. On the right the water cuts in at about 270 making any poorly struck drive in danger. The green has a low pocket on the mid-left side which feeds balls toward the hole, every other pin is very tough though.
Your classic volcano green complex. Propped up above deep bunkers. The green is relatively flat and is a birdie opportunity late in the round.
Hole 17 - Double Jump
Likely the most difficult par 4 on the course if only for length. Requires two deftly struck shots. The green is relatively large.
Hole 18 - Barn
Hole 18 sends you back parallel to 17 but with a much more demanding drive. Aiming over the fairway bunkers is the best line as anything further left risks rough or water. The green is set up against the hillside and slopes severely from back to front.
Thanks for reading my post and enjoy!
