Hi all, I've been lurking around the forums for more than a year but finally decided to step up, create an account and make a post about a course I've been working on lately. I've watched a good amount of videos from a bunch of people on the forum and read through other stuff I could find - but would greatly appreciate if I some of you would find the time to play and give feedback of my latest course (I've done a couple before but at that point of the learning curve deemed it way too early to post about them). I also feel that at this point I might very well be blind to a whole bunch of flaws, that are probably pretty easy to spot for more experienced designers.
Rustic Island Club - Currently published as 'RIC beta'. To explain the setup and what I have tried to achieve:
-Delta theme set on an island, routing in two loops coming back to the clubhouse, with a good amount of holes edging the sea.
-Plays quite fast & firm, and for the most part allows for ground game, running up shots to the greens if necessary.
-Default speed for greens at 158, can be pushed up a bit but I would imagine speeds at 180s (while still playable) could push it to borderline gimmicky..
-I've tried to provide some strategic interest with relatively wide fairways (35-65ish yds), which, while sometimes a bit tilted, should be relatively easy to find for the most part. The landing areas that provide an ideal angle & distance to the green are mostly a bit smaller targets. Green sizes vary from ca 4,000 sqf to 10,000 sqf, and the challenge (or at least how I perceive it) is in getting the approach shot close to the hole.
-Bunkering very loosely inspired by the sandbelt style - I've used a thin edge of heavy rough texture (often stony in delta) with the bunkers while the fairways have a thin light rough edge on top of that. I think that some bunkers have a decently nice look, while it maybe doesn't work so well with the others.
-Otherwise I tried to go for a pretty rustic & natural look, with the contouring slightly edgy on some of the fairways.
-While I tried to minimize blindness and provide for the most part a decent look of what lies ahead, depending on where a player finds himself there might be some shots where the view is partially blocked. Would be great to hear if you felt that it was problematic or not.
-Please note that while most of the planting bordering the holes is more or less as I intended it to be, the clubhouse area and the more peripheral areas have not yet been done
-While I'm not yet sure if I will try to get the final product TGC Approved one day, would also appreciate specific feedback regarding that
-For a neutral setup, would recommend the default settings: medium SE wind and back (white) tees. Out of the pins 1,3 and 4 are quite neutral, while pin set 2 probably is probably the trickiest.
Some pics that will hopefully show:
