I remember the days the PGA/Platinum threads were a hive of humour and villainy, these days it's just crickets apparently. Well screw you guys, I'm playing my first top tier event since TGC2 and I'm starting a thread! I don't care if I'm only talking to myself! Played my first round last night alongside the ghosts of a couple of fellow Xbox qualifiers, cozy2000 and ArrangedPizza93. Rooting for all 3 of us! Fine margins were the difference for me, as is often the case on a course set up like this. After a settling birdie at the 1st I was only a yard short of being in stiff for a second one on 2. But no, it just caught that slope and rolled off in to the pit of doom. To be honest I was fairly happy to get out of there with only a bogey, there were worse numbers! Then that drivable par 4 over the water (11?) I hit a perfect drive and was amazed to see my ball stick on the down slope instead of feeding back to the hole. Left me a 20 foot double breaking down hiller for eagle which I actually got a pretty good read on but the ball just died past the bottom edge..... and rolled off the green. Par. Fine margins. Still, I felt like I hung in there pretty well and a nice little burst of 3 birds and an eagle coming home got me to a respectable 62. Got work to do to have a chance of playing the weekend but at least I haven't played myself out of it. Same story for my playing partners who finished with a 62 and 63. Thought the course was a really nice fit for the event. Plenty of spots not to be but they're not hidden. I'm just happy to be here to be honest, even if it's just for a couple of rounds. I enjoyed it . Does anyone know, if any of us qualifiers make the cut do we get offered a Platinum Tour card? That would put a bit more on round 2!

-10 in the first round for me, but threw it all away in the second; couldn’t handle the lack of wind and shot -2
Played the last two as well though and did manage to throw in a -14 in the last… won’t count but felt good! 😎

Opened up with a bird on hole one and that was the highlight of my front nine. Hole two tee shot looked good in the air but caught a little too much of the back stop and ran into the pit of doom! Only got a bogey (luckily) after the third attempt at trying to get back on the green ended up being a hole out! That was the first of four bogeys on the front nine. A solid back nine of -7 saw me finish the round at 6 under. Shot -10 in round two but still couldn't avoid two or three bogeys. -16 at the halfway stage and a missed cut for me. Good luck in your second round mate 👍🏻

I see this course got rave reviews by the others in the design community but I just don't see it. I think if it was submitted by an unknown designer it would not have even been accepted into the database, much less picked for a major championship. Multiple blind approach shots, table top pin positions, over use of crowned fairways. I know that links courses often have unpredictable bounces but it's overdone here, and usually links courses offer ability to bounce shots into the green which enables recovery opportunities. Rather than present risk/reward opportunities and strategic choices shot selection is basically forced by the conditions and layout.

This is the part of the thread where everyone remembers they quit starting threads in the platinum forum so they didn't have to listen to donkeypuncher whine about the course each week

I know that links courses often have unpredictable bounces but it's overdone here, and usually links courses offer ability to bounce shots into the green which enables recovery opportunities. Rather than present risk/reward opportunities and strategic choices shot selection is basically forced by the conditions and layout. Well, if you've never played a links course, yeah, you won't get it - people regularly don't understand just how different a style of golf it is until they play them in real life. This one was based on Cruden Bay, Rye, Burnham and Berrow (in spots) and North Berwick, which are on some of the most extreme linksland, all of which feature multiple blind shots and bold land movement, but are short in distance to compensate. The greens here are wild and challenging for sure - they were designed for a different game and as it was a major, we decided to keep them as they were. But you'll find open long approaches to every hole other than 18 (even then, that's only got no ground short for a front pin). Obviously, I disagree totally about shot selection being forced - I'd argue you'll never get a major with more options. You can lay up on multiple holes, have wide fairways and big greens to aim at, different ways to work the ball towards holes etc. Cruden Bay 17th - fairway mound very much in play Rye 13th. Hit your tee shot to this fairway, triangulate (genuinely) to work out roughly where the green is, hit over a 30ft tall dune and hope you got it right. Great hole. Rye overhead with the dune ridge. The bold use of the land should be noted by the runway fairway on the 4th (top left) - if you miss that, you are 20 feet below the green (which is again on a knoll) for your approach. Rye undulations (each from 3-5ft - which you'd be surprised how high is in game): Cruden Bay 3rd: Rye 7th: Burnham and Berrow 2nd: www.burnhamandberrowgolfclub.co.uk/course/course-tour/championship/hole/2/

If this was submitted by a random designer it probably would have gotten more praise than it did. Sorry bout your eyes 'n stuff 🤷

Lol, there's the Platinum thread I know and love! 🤣🤣
I just see it that some courses fit your eye and some don't, often without any rhyme or reason. This one, you certainly need to be aware of where your good misses are. Firing straight at every pin is likely to lead to trouble, but that's how it should be.
Second round done. Actually had a few nerves for the first time in forever on these tours! Started birdie birdie stupid bogey, but oddly the stupid bogey kind of settled me down a little. I then proceeded to play some of the best pixel golf I've ever played in any version of this game. And on top of that, where I didn't feel I got the rub off the green in the first round the golf gods were smiling on me on this one with a nice bounce or two here and there. At one point I hit a grey fast which turned in to the most perfect approach I could have hit. Played well with a bit of luck thrown in - great mixture! The only slightly sour taste came from the last two holes, a 3-putt bogey from nowhere on 17 and a missed short birdie putt on 18 which broke the complete opposite way to what I'd played for. But that's being greedy. I had 60 in my head as a target to get to -18, so I'll happily take a 58 to get to -20. Looks like I'd better extend my stay at the b&b for the weekend 😎

According to Lidar 20ft dropoff from the fairway,14ft up to the green. (of course data could always be wrong) but the points you make are all valid.5th green foreground 4th in background in 2k23.

Good spot, just checked on Google Maps - 20ft to the green and 25ft to the centre of the fairway. Always felt more when I've played it. It's a long way up!

Played the last two rounds, nothing much to see here. Got stuck behind a mound in the rough for an early double in round 3, it was like watching me hacking around in real life! Was +3 after 6 so was actually quite happy to get it back to -4 in that wind. Then the 4th round my putter went cold on the front 9 and I just kinda went through the motions on the back. Hit two more of those mounds trying to hack out of the rough too, you'd think I would have learned after the first 2?! My job was done to be fair, I was never going to be anywhere near challenging. Just to qualify for this was great, to make the cut on top I'm really pleased with. I qualified for 4 Majors back in 2017 and 2018 and didn't make a cut so arguably this is one of my best weeks on these great tours. Got my fingers crossed for you horusphoenix

Got my fingers crossed for you horusphoenix Thanks Jamie, sadly I'm going to come up at least one shot shy of the lead. Someone on discord mentioned a guy on ps got to -51. I'll be a bit gutted if it's just the one shot that denies me the win, as it's much easier to look back on your final round and go through the "if I did this, I should have done that" bla bla. But, in truth this will easily be my best finish in Platinum, so I don't have any grounds to complain. I knew the number I had to chase down before I played my final round and I did get a bit nervy (stupid I know) managed to get off to a good start but just didn't hit enough close approaches in the final round. I played a few poor pitch shots on the short par 4's, which was annoying as they were the holes I'd been taking advantage of during the week. I thought as tough as the course could potentially play especially when the winds were up in round 3, it was a fair challenge, all the par 5's were there to be attacked and as long as you were sensible on the short par 4's they always offered up chances. It was mainly the par 3's that I found the protection on this course, along with that colossal par 4 9th hole. My putter has been the major weakness for me since swapping over controllers, as I've had zero pace or feel for it and with that comes the lack of confidence standing over any putt. But, this week I putted solid and apart from an early putt that rolled all the way back to my feet in round 1, I didn't leave much out there at all on the greens. It was nice to go into a final round and think if I played well I may have had a chance, not a feeling I've ever had in platinum. Usually, I'll be plodding around by myself in no-man's land. I'm just hoping I can put myself in that position again, as I know these chances won't come knocking very often. I was actually intrigued to see how many starts I've had in platinum so just looked now (this was my 64th start) so if I have to wait another 64 events to be in contention come the final round, then @!$#ing help me. Nice week by yourself Jamie, glad you were able to make the cut as I know you said you targeted the British Open as the major you wanted to get into. And a made cut should mean we'll be seeing you on the 1st tee next week and with that means the Platinum threads might be getting a new lease of life. Happy days! Just try not to fall into the posh boys ways when you get here, most order caviar instead of snickers at the halfway hunt, snobs..."Yeah so can I order a large dish of caviar for next week's event, thanks."
