PLEASE HELP.
I am in the rookie design contest and its crunch time!! I have a lot of work left to do on this one still, but I wanted to publish a "Very rough" beta version of this one and get some feedback from other designers in the community. Please, anything and everything help. I am still a little newbish on the green speeds... I don't have them at default, but feel they could be better. Tell me what you hate, tell me what you want to see more of. I am very open to critiques. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
The course name is "PitchyBeta"
Cheers,

Just finished my round. Played pin set 3, black tees.
In general I think there needs to be some more variety in the tee shot. With few exceptions it felt as though I was being asked to split the fairway with driver on every par 4. In part this has to do with the narrowness of the fairways, it's fine to pinch them at certain places, but rarely did I feel like I was being given any sort of lay up option This meant that even though there was variation in distances I felt as though I was constantly playing the same shots. Your visuals off the tee are clearly your strong suit but at times the items around the tees took away from the planting and just cramped everything. There are a lot of false fronts on the greens, and I don't think all of them are intentional so I'd look into deciding what you want to do with them. Pin 3 on hole 9 seemed especially punitive given the slope that pin is on. If its intentional, I'd look into softening it so that staying on the green is the challenge for the shot in, not when putting. Tee box on the 11th is wildly uneven but I think you already know that. Same goes for bunker sculpting.
Overall though I'd say that you'll want to spend some time going through the course analytically and thinking about what you're asking for with each shot. If you find yourself saying the same thing over and over, consider playing around a bit more with your angles and fairways. Best of luck in the competition.

Black tees, pin 1. default wind which looks like light to medium light wind SW.
Hole 1-This is a really nice looking tee shot. I like the planting down the left side in the dirt. I can decide if I like the bricks and fences around the pine trees, I dont think I do but this is my preference. Also, you have the gorgeous lake on the right side. I wish this was more visable from the tees. It would give the tee shot that extra POP. Good job though. I wish my second shot wasnt going directly into the sun, but so be it. I like the palm to the right of the green. My put was going toward the water. What an awesome view over the lake with the city in the background.
Hole 2-Water on the left side seems a little out of place, and you cant see it from the tee. I like the planting behind the green on this one. Nice hole
Hole 3-There is some open grass to the right near where you tee shot would land. Seems like there could be some planting or something here. More of the trees with fences, I dont like these I decided. Just seem a little out of place to me. I think they could work in the right spot. The water to the right of this hole is pretty hidden throughout the hole. A lot of open space behind the green. I also think this green is pretty flat. Could use some more ridges or something to make it more interesting. I dont mind shadows on a green, but a lot of this community seems to think shadows on the green are bad. There is one from your pine tree on this green.
Hole 4-The building on the left looks nice. As I was looking at it, I noticed there is a patch of grass in the middle of your road that looks funky. I like the look of this tee shot with the hills in the background and buildings in the hills. Another green I think that could use some undulation
Hole 5-Fun tee shot with the bunkers in front. Maybe this is a pattern, but this green seems flat as well. With it being a shorter shot, I would make the green a little tougher.
Hole 6- I am thinking this is part of the course you havent finished yet. There is a lot of open space behind this green. This green seems better as well with more ridges. The humps in the water behind the green look a little funky to me.
Hole 7-fun tee shot here over the water. Flat green and a shadow from the tree on it (if you care:)).
Hole 8-Nice hole! I like the bridge. I dont think this matters, but I think the was the first hole marker on the right side. I think it looks nice, the sun makes it stand out.
Hole 9-Ive decided that the trees with the fences around them look like the trees are sitting in a trash can from a distance. From this point forward I will call them "trash can trees"! I like the planting on the hill with not much wind. I am wondering what they look like in high wind. Sometimes those sunken trees can look funky in the wind. As is, they look good. Another flat green.
HOle 10-The bridge coming out of what I think is your clubhouse looks a little over the top to me. I dont really get the building in the rocks either. Also, maybe you havent made it yet but this is the only hole marker that is just a sign. Maybe you just havent made the actual marker yet? Seems off. Check your way points on this hole. My approach was taking me to the end of the first fairway weirdly. It looks like this is part of the course that isnt complete yet, so I dont want to comment too much on it. I like the lake on this hole, will look better once the planting is complete. Also, this green looks larger than the rest maybe. Seems too big. I do like the hills in it though.
Hole 11-I really like this hole. I also think it will play different in different winds. The approach is spectacular. My only feedback is the bridge going to the green seems funky. Maybe take a look at that one? Nice hole.
Hole 12-I also agree that the sail seems out of place. Nice tee shot otherwise. If it were me, I would think about connecting those 2 fairways. I like the front portion of this green, the top looks kind of flat again. This is a fun pin spot.
Hole 13-Tough tee shot, I like this hole. good job
Hole 14-I like how these 2 fairways connect. This is what I think you could go for on hole 12. There is a lot of open grass around the tee here. This green is fun how everything flows into your fairway. Nice hole.
Hole 15-I think the palm in the middle of the fairway here looks weird. Its so far out of play as well, I dont think it is necessary. More trash can trees:) This hole is just missing some more planting, good hole though.
HOle 16-I was not expecting this tee shot with those ditches. I'm diggin it. I think it could be planted a little heavier. Cool hole with the hlls and cliffs, another flatter green.
Hole 17-Holy trash can trees batman. What a spectacular shot downhill. I am a big fan of this hole, could just use some additional planting.
Hole 18-Maybe sink down the front tee boxes here to give a better view, or raise the back tee. More planting I'm sure is coming. Nice view of the clubhouse. Very tough approach coming into this pin. I like this green much more.
Ultimately this course is great. I would try to make your greens a little more interesting, and maybe try to show some of your features a little more from the tees. The views are spectacular. I am also in the rookie course and made a desert course (MOAGC National), I hope mine doesnt go against yours early! Feel free to give me some feedback as well. I hope I didnt offend you with the trash can tree remark, Just not my style. Most of my comments are for my preference. Cant wait to play the finished product, and good luck in the competition.

mrfatmark Thanks so much for the feedback!!! I have tweaked almost every green after your post. A common critique of my courses is the greens are too flat. Hope I dont go up against you either!! Good luck, Sir!
