We've all been there where you have grandiose ideas in your head and just don't have the motivation to put them in game. I feel like this happens to me way more than the designers I see on stream, especially since I am very new to course design. What do y'all do to combat this?

When designing, I'll work on off course features when I'm burntout, or lay a lot of water planes if needed. I also sometimes skip to another hole if I have an idea for that. Other times the best cure for burnout is to just stop playing the game altogether for a while.

I normally have a casual side project like a mini golf course which gives you more freedom but keeps you in the designer. If that doesn't suit you could try par 3 or pitch and putt courses to keep you ticking over.

Literally leave the game for months. It’s the only way I found. Even then returning is difficult.

I normally have 3-4 courses going at one time and can switch between those to keep things fresh but yes, I get times where I'm just not feeling it too and getting away from the designer for a few days fixes it.

I DM Dungeons and Dragons. I have been doing this since the 1970s, so even though I am currently working on my first PGA 2K23 course, the burnout is the same regardless.
— Don't put yourself in a position to burn yourself out. If you're spending every waking hour of a three day weekend designing, you'll likely burn out. — Carry a notepad and pencil (or use the note function on your phone). If an idea pops into your head, right it down. Now! Those random thoughts are gold mines and trying to remember that gold nugget later can be problematic. — Find something else to take up some of your free time. I play a bit of poker and although not currently playing D&D, I am still designing. — Bonus: Take a screen shot of your course from a distance and make it your screen's background. Even though you might be doing something else on your computer, you might look at a portion of the screen and get one of those gold nuggets to pop in your head.
Unless you are in a design contest where there is a time crunch, just remember, you don't have to work on a course until you are ready.
