We're (players, schedulers, rangers etc) seeing lots of issues with greens on both ported courses and new designs, so I wanted to do a video to address them and post it as widely as possible. There have been big shifts in how the game plays and how green slopes in particular react. Hopefully it's useful

Hey Ben,
Well thought out and explained. This is an excellent tutorial that all serious designers should watch. Thank you for making this.

This is a great way to showcase differences in reactions of the ball on the 2k23 greens vs. previous game. Hope designers take note as many greens just don't play as designed in the new game and it punishes well-played shots

If only the game developers followed this advice. I played a bunch of career mode today and took some big numbers on the impossible greens at Innisbruck and St. Antonio.

There's a par-3 at TPC River Highlands (No. 16, I think?), where Pin 2 is a nightmare and is inaccessible from anywhere. And the Hole 1, Pin 1 at East Lake is famous for it's "illegal" placement in the game on like 110 speeds or whatever. Plus, I skip St. George's and the RBC Canadian Open whenever it comes around because the greens are insane and make you want to pull your hair out.

These videos helped me immensely to understand a few things, thanks a bunch for putting these out. Something I'm still not 100% sure about is my green speed settings. I see the chart in the thread, but what's a good speed to go for with moderate breaks?I want them to be tough, but also want them to be playable and fun so you want to play the course more than once. Is there a general consensus?

Is there a general consensus? Hard to say, without actually seeing the slopes you're referring to. For example, I am working on a course with some pretty pronounced sloping on the greens, and have my green speeds set to 135, which is "Medium/Moderate". If you have less sloping with less red on the greens, obviously you can boost the speeds up more. It's really a case by case basis. The one thing I'm not really thrilled about with the 135 speeds is that this setting is right near default Moderate, which is 134. It's usually a good idea to set your speeds in between those default settings to allow for maximum adjustment if the course gets picked up for tour play. For example, I am considering getting my greens to work better somewhere around 145, so they could be used at default Moderate and maybe even default fast, too.

Is there a general consensus? As sroel says, it depends as the amount of break changes with the speed you put them at. The general advice would be to go with somewhere between any two of the default settings, but just playtest until you get it how you want, where you feel there's an appropriate balance of challenge and friendliness. If you want your greens to have particularly bold features (see: Doak courses), put the green speeds lower. If you want them faster (see: Oakmont), you need fewer bold contours or the ball will just be kicked into the rough again and again. The only other advice would be to set the general speed early. You don't want to have to go back and redo greens later. If you have absolutely no idea, somewhere in the 140s is always safe.

Thanks guys, I'm putting downhill on some pretty severe double red slopes from the back of a green to the front and the ball is holding. So I think I may have found a good range? I have them set to Med. Fast (10.0). Not sure exactly what that equals, but I imagine it's in the 140s range?

10.0 translates to 151 feet max putt distance.
For comparison, 8.5 translates to 142.

I did not know that the number in the middle column of the original post indicated max putt distance. I honestly thought that it was a PC vs console display thing. Like it showed as 10.0 on console and 151 on PC or something like that. Much appreciated

Excellent explanation of how designers need to be more aware of the differences with 2K23 for green design and approach to greens. If only I had a watched this before I published any courses in 2K23. I now know I have many offending greens which require revamping, and I am glad I saw this before embarking on WCoD Season 9. Thanks Ben

Quick question for anybody who's able to answer: I'm currently designing a course with 130 green speeds. I'm not making incredibly slope-y greens, but through four holes there is, at minimum, two pin locations that would be unfair at higher speeds. Is that enough to get a course rejected from being put in the database, or are they judged based on their default green speeds?
