Fictional Background:
The limestone rolling hills of the Gippsland region of Victoria in Australia has historically been dairy country. However, one struggling dairy farmer decided to diversify by planting a small plantation; installing wind turbines; and converting part of his farm into a basic golf course. He built the course with minimal changes to the land; expanding old cattle tracks for access; keeping the grand, old shade trees as hazards; slowly converting the old, boggy patches into ponds; and simply mowing the land to create fairways, tees and greens. Welcome to Gippsland Rolling Hills golf course.
The Course:
The course is bunker-free but is a bit of roller-coaster ride with plenty of elevation changes as you go up hill and down dale. Sometimes you play along the valleys and sometimes the ridge lines.
There is a lot of movement in the greens so the default green speed is Medium-Slow (127 with default balls) but it will comfortably go to Moderate / Medium speed. Fast and Very Fast is only recommended for masochists because some of the pins will become barely legal and the run-off from many of the greens will test your patience. However, it a fun challenge when you put the winds on Very High.
There are 4 pins but only one tee set, which has a course length of 7,646 yards.
The default weather and lighting is a misty, early morning. The course will cope with Dawn and Dusk but I recommend only in Clear conditions. A noon, rainy round also looks good.
Design Concept:
This started out as an experiment in the 2K21 designer to build a course that was as minimalist as possible but still looked ok and provided a challenge. Once I had the rolling hills concept, I tried to stick to the philosophy of a dairy farmer moving as little earth around as possible and basically mowing the pastures he already had. I've added a few more items than originally planned to build a (hopefully) convincing landscape but I have kept the object meter to only 25%.
Enjoy!
