Hey guys, how important is it to incorporate multiple tee boxes when designing a course? Do people actually play the shorter tees? Working on my third course so wondering if I need them. Thank you!

Hey cashman,
Multiple tee boxes offer the player more options to see your course from different perspectives. They make your course more realistic but try to space them out to make a difference and perhaps not all in one straight line as they tend to look weird. The biggest reason to have 4 tees is if you hope to have your course become tourworthy as it is a requirement along with four pin placements.

Troy(retteach) Having four tees is not a requirement for tour worthy, only four pins. Barton Hills only has one set of tees and was the course for the American Open on the Platinum tour. Having multiple tees does offer the schedulers a nice variety for each round. I recommend having four set of tees which offer different angles more than different distances. This gives each hole a unique look at each fairway/green from the tee and offers a little more visual variety for the players from round to round. Different angles work really well with par 3's when considered with each pin. You can have pin 1 be easy from the back tee and difficult from the front tee depending on green slopes and bunker placements.

Also search for a tutorial by Q that talks about tee manipulation, I used this trick on TCC, Brookline (US Open) to allow me to use the exact tee sets they used in the US Open and give schedulers the opportunity to set up the exact tee set and pin combinations.
I also used it on Hayling Golf Club so all four tees play similar yardage but you get some different angles for the par 3s
