The Pentagon Club, VA is my 2022 National Treasure entry. I was late to the enrolment party so was originally an alternate and allocated as the second Virginia. I have since been promoted to the main field. Thanks to jwtexan & Crazycanuck1985 for organising this.
Background:
Arlington, Virginia is the location for the largest office building in the world, The Pentagon, home of the Department of Defence. The DoD social club decided they needed an adjoining golf course. After some major urban redevelopment to remove all the freeways (combined with a fair amount of artistic licence on my part!), a new golf course has been built. This parkland style course is bounded by The Pentagon to the south; the Arlington National Cemetery to the west; Arlington Memorial Avenue and Bridge to the north; and the mighty Potomac River to the east.
The Course:
This tight, par 71 course is not long at only 6,976 yards from the back Blue tees but you will need to employ plenty of shot-shaping if you want to keep hitting the big boy driver off the tee. The tight fairways are combined with generous amounts of light rough.
You get to experience the course in its full Virginian autumnal glory. Be warned - it's colourful. None of those naturalistic grey, olive and brown palettes here! It will cope with any time of day but I suggest keeping the default weather to tone down the colour (and hide the plot background!). If you decide to play with clear skies, be prepared to turn your brightness down or put some sunglasses on!
I realised too late that my three par 5 holes all play in the same direction. If you want to make them more reachable, then use a S (or SE or SW) wind but you will pay the price by making the long par 4 holes going in the opposite direction tougher.
Some Other Fun Facts:
- I have not used a single item from the grass or plant menu but have still got to 99.9% on the object meter.
- My little piece of the National War Cemetary has nearly 1,300 gravestones, each one made up of two sunken, concrete posts. It was every bit as tedious to build as it sounds but I think the end result was worth it
- The blue canton part of the Stars & Stripes sunken garden on hole 13 (spot the connection there) contains about 140 blue vans and uses about 25% of the object meter by itself. The whole flag is to the official flag proportions
- The Pentagon footprint is to scale with each side over 300 yds.
- If I have counted correctly, my version of the 9/11 Memorial has 184 benches, representing the lives lost at the Pentagon on that horrific day.
Below are some screenshots. I design on XBox Series S so my screenshot ability is limited. I would appreciate an overhead shot from a generous PC soul.
I would also appreciate any feedback, whether good, bad or indifferent. Enjoy!
* I publish on XBox so the timing to appear in the database is unlikely to be Perfect and will either be Very Fast or Very Slow π *
