I haven't done a WIP thread for anything in quite a while so figured I'd do this one and might even do some progress timelapes along the way.
OCM Design who have done projects such as Peninsula Kingswood, Medinah #3 and Shady Oaks are about to build a course in Minnesota which will be called Tepetonka. Very little is currently known about the proposed design as it was only presented to it's investors days ago. Because of that, I thought it would be a fun project to try and find the land where the proposed course is going and build my own there first. Obviously mine will be significantly different to what will be presented in 2024 when its completed but thought it was a fun idea all the same.
Anyway, finding this piece of property was honestly way more difficult than I had envisaged. I had the below video to work off and some very vague information on the area in Minnesota. I was so close to giving up and just trying to create the landscape myself but long story short - I found it and have pulled in the lidar.
So here's the landscape I'll be working with and I'll post some updates in a few days/weeks with how the plot looks in its raw form for anyone interested.

The area at the start in the 8 second range and also the flyover part in the 32 second range of the video, excited to see how those come together.

The area at the start in the 8 second range and also the flyover part in the 32 second range of the video, excited to see how those come together. Yeah no doubt working out how to use the routing to maximise some of those great views and land movements is easily the most fun part of this project. Thanks for your interest. I've now routed all the holes and will begin laying the surfaces. I started by highlighting about 6-7 greensites scattered across the plot that I felt had to be included. I then worked out where I thought the infrusture would be most likely to go given entry points and existing buildings etc. Unfortunately I have no idea where the ownership of the plot starts and finishes so from a RL accuracy POV, I'm pretty hampered by that. I put 3 holes on the N/E side of the Shakopee Creek but I wouldn't be suprised if they don't own that land given there's a farm nearby. Hard to know. I've decided I'm going to leave the land across the entire plot unsculptered as much as possible. I'm going to try and tackle this as if it were real and moving large areas of soil would be pretty unrealistic I'd imagine. I'm therefore just going to change elevations to some tee boxes and greens and very literally just use what the land gives me for the rest. I'm probably going to remove more trees than OCM will in reality but I'm going to avoid editing in full grown trees that aren't there already. Anyway, here's the routing in its raw form. The bushes scattered through the plot are just markers for cedars as I wanted to see the land without trees casting shadows etc. The brown texture is the creek and everything else is just untouched lidar.

I better publish my Utah NT course before this. It looks like almost the same exact plot 😂

I'll bet this one turns out to be a beauty with your design skills. Look forward to progress updates.

Kinda scoping around on OCM’s IG it’s cool seeing how they transform courses and update the look, curious if you’ve tried reaching out to them? It definitely would seem like a weird/fun interaction, “…no Heisenberg, like in Breaking bad, no yeah…I make (absolutely breathtaking) courses in a video game…you wouldn’t happen to have a napkin sketch of your routing for Teptonka?” I dig their style and I have no doubts you are gonna kill it with this course.

Fun! It's amazing how big that file size gets when you pull in that much lidar data. I'm here in Minnesota, so I will have some interest in both your and OCM's projects. Keep us updated!

Eheh. I have actually been in contact with Mike Cocking (the C in OCM) in the past about something else. Really good bloke but I'm not going to hassle him with this as I doubt they'd want too much to get out until the course plans are announced, etc anyway Fun! Yeah the file size really slows down the designer unfortunately. I feel like I'm back on ps4 again. If you've got a spare $100,000 as the initial investment & $25k a year for 100 rounds, you should sign up

This is comfortably the most fun I've had designing a course in the game. Been putting in quite a few hours and I feel like I've passed the halfway mark now. Still got a shitload of planting to do but figured I'd throw in a few progress images. All holes are now routed, surfaced and bunkered (other than 18).... 3rd Green / 4th Fairway 1st Green / 11th fairway bunkers My favourite hole is the 4th - this is the green 1st Green One thing I really regret with doing this is the amount of lidar I pulled in to the plot. I used lidar on nearly the entire plot and it's slowed the planting down quite a lot unfortunately. Anyway will likely be done in the a week or two now anyway.

The creek looks very authentic, can't wait to see more.
