So this launches tomorrow. Anyone planning on picking it up?
I've only ever played the first Dark Souls for maybe five hours so going in pretty blind but looking forward to it based on the incredible reviews.

I never was impressed by Dark Souls, so every time I see a review that says its like Dark Souls, I stop reading.
I probably need to at some point at least take a closer look at this, with all the hype its getting.

I was the same with Dark Souls but this seems more up my street. Here's hoping at least!

As others, I wasn't a huge dark souls fan...but the open world aspect and the sheer amount of...stuff... in this game has me excited. I am happy to learn a different combat system if I have a world that is interesting and full to play in. When I first played The Witcher series the combat put me off...but I eventually gave it another shot (more like 4 different shots as it KEPT putting me off) and finally found my rhythm and enjoyed dying more than I would normally like. Now when I play more action oriented RPGs dying doesn't bother me at all. In fact I tend to pick a fun way to beat a group or a boss and will just keep at it until I can win the way I WANT to win. heh. should be fun. Already downloaded it on series X so...LFG!

Had this on pre-order for ages and now frantically refreshing the tracking page waiting for it to turn up, cant wait!
I'd class myself as a Souls fan but I'm not one of the massive 'git gud' fanboys that rave about it all the time. I was kinda late into the series, Bloodborne was the first game I played but have since gone back and played the all the Dark Souls. Demons Souls on PS5 was amazing.
I can totally understand why these games turn some people off, they aren't easy, but to me thats the beauty of them. The sense of satisfaction received when actually beating a boss that you have been stuck on for some time is hard to find in any other game.
I remember on my first play through of Bloodborne I was stuck on the first boss for about a week or so (supposedly one of the easier bosses). I just didnt know what to do, every night I'd log on and get my ass handed to me for a couple of hours and then turn off confused as to what was going on. I nearly quit at the point but persevered and finally beat it. What I realised after the matter that although I was dying (lots!) I was learning the game, it mad me think differently in my approach. Hack and slash just wasnt going to cut it. You start to learn their moves and patterns and see openings for when to attack. It taught me patience.
I think this game will bring in a host of new players. I just hope that too many dont get turned off and get past the hard learning curve that I went through to fully understand how good these games can truly be.

You've summed up my experience with the Witcher 3 exactly. I bounced off it two or three times before forcing myself to make it to Novigrad and now it's one of my favourite games. And I feel the exact same way about Elden Ring. I found Dark Souls incredibly difficult. Could appreciate how good it was but when you got stuck there was nothing to do but try over and over again. Whereas in ER it seems much more open with different ways to progress, explore and the art style and world look incredible. So definitely incentive to slowly master the combat. Can't wait to try it tonight!

two questions I would have for those playing it-
How is the story and immersion? In games I prefer a good story, and roleplaying immersion over anything else. I prefer that over combat. I don't care as much about beating a boss as much as I do 'why' I beat that boss and what effect did it have on the game world/story?
Another example of immersion would be I can't stand games where the character wields a sword that is bigger than they are. I prefer more realistic looking weapons, things the character could actually hold.
With that in mind, how would this game be?

I have pretty similar taste in RPG's to you I think. Just as an example my favourite games are probably Fallout: New Vegas, and The Witcher 3. Great dialogue, characters, interesting quests, coherent world. I haven't actually played this yet (so take this with a pinch of salt) but from reading this week the Fromsoft design ethos seems to be different to that but still provide a really fleshed out world. So, I think the actual term would be more 'environmental storytelling' where the world visuals and item descriptions / placement do a lot of the world-building. If that makes sense. Not my usual style of game but I'm psyching myself up to really try and enjoy it. P.s. I have seen some MASSIVE weapons and pretty crazy character designs in the trailers if that's a deal-breaker. But will update you after I get a session.

Speaking to my brother who's played a lot of these games he says think of it as Breath of the Wild cross Dark Souls / Sekiro as you can go and tackle stuff whenever you want / how to. He advised me, a Dark Souls Newbie as never played them, to not worry much about starting class and pick one you like the sound off, and don't be afraid to just @!$# off and explore to go and get some gear, and to level up before tackling anything big

You might not believe this but I finished Witcher 1 and 2 when they came out but never played 3 , was big into Dragon Age at the time. I am waiting for the remastered Ray Tracing Witcher 3, so will eventually play it. I did play Jedi Fallen Order recently and I know it is a bit Dark Souls like but not so brutally difficult but I really enjoyed it. I know I would love Elden Ring but the commitment to start a big game can be scary. I did try DS but never got round to playing it.

I will probably play it's sequel when I get round to finishing the game in about 3 years time.

so...story. THERE IS NO spoon feeding. IF you want the story you have to seek it out. The lore is everywhere and you can put it all together but there is ZERO hand holding. You know that you are "tarnished" and something about the ring and a little bit more...but then it's just "plop" here you go! enjoy! and you have to find it all.
This is open world to the point where you won't know a WHY of beating many "bosses" in dungeons because they are just there for you to find and explore (a bit of skyrim here). The main story line will give you reasons for doing things but so far (I have not played a lot and what I have played has been just trying to get the button layout down because I keep healing myself instead of blocking or jumping...gah...) The story hasn't taken off.
George RR Martin wrote the lore and story for the game so I'm sure it's coming hard and heavy but there is nothing given to you.
