I have been designing in the game for about 4 years. I love it, but certainly have much to learn!
I have most often worked on courses which are intended to have a natural feel and a European/UK look. That means often working with the Rustic and Countryside themes.
I have concluded that is WAY more difficult to produce a course, in these themes, which looks good in the game.
When I have used Delta (particularly) or even Highlands, the whole designing process seems much easier and the results far more dramatic. The first ever Delta course I designed was TourWorthy - an accolade rightly not awarded to any of my Rustic/Countryside Courses.
Is this just me? Do other designers find different levels of success/satisfaction between themes? It seems that the big competition winners tend to come from a limited number of the themes. Delta certainly seems the best “bet”?
I put this out just for chat and feedback from fellow designers.

I love the richness of Swiss and the barren nature of Desert. I’ve had Steppe and Tropical approved as well.

I think Delta is chosen a lot due to the fact that it offers the most versatility. It can produce an oceanside dunes course, a lowcountry template course, and everything in between. I think the ground/grass in Delta also responds best to burying trees.
Personally, I've used Boreal more than any other theme, but that's because I've produced several Parkland courses, and that really gets the job done there for me. But my tour worthy courses are Highlands, Autumn, and Rustic. Other approved courses I have were done in Steppe, Countryside, Swiss, and Delta. I love trying all the themes to see what they can do, but Delta for sure seems to be the most popular, thanks to its wide range of uses.

I'd say theme has very little bearing on if a course is more likely to get Tour Worthy over Approved. That is more a measure of the designers skill. Design competitions are a different story. There I'd say themes such as Highlands, Steppe and Delta hold a small advantage, but that's more for their flexibility.
Personally I try not to overuse the same theme too much. Out of 17 courses I've made my stats are Highlands - 4 Tropical - 3 Steppe - 2 Countryside - 2 Autumn - 2 Delta - 1 Swiss - 1 Rustic - 1 Boreal - 1
Interesting for me to see the breakdown like that as I wouldn't class Highlands or Tropical as my personal favourites. I'd say I like working in Countryside and Autumn the best.
