I'm starting to think about planting for my prairie municipal course. I put down some grasses on the fairway, but when I tested the hole from the tee the grasses were too far away to get drawn by the engine. Are there any tricks to making the draw distance longer? (For example, is it at all based on how many total objects are being drawn based based on the current view? Or is it a pretty standard distance?)
Is it better to use plants than grass? Are all plants the same, or do some disappear at a distance?

Plants render at a longer distance as does “over-sized” grass. The trouble with over sized grass is if it’s too close to the fairway or green and the player hits into, or near it. Nothing more unrealistic than head high grass.
So experiment with it and size it appropriately.

Check out how Matty did Shoreditch. I tried to emulate his tricks on Rath at Scarden Beg.
Different grass has different draw distance. We both buried a lot of grass to allow for oversize objects but without being insanely tall...
That said, burying grass is both tedious and for masochists...

Im interested in your comment about burying oversized grasses. Im on a console where burying of mass planting is not possible but Im considering going onto PC. Can mass planting be partially buried on PC ? If not, fair play if you guys if you are burying grasses one by one, thats hideously slow !

Burying anything has to be done by hand regardless of platform.

<<Can mass planting be partially buried on PC?>>
Not that I'm aware? When you say "mass planting" do you mean the built in feature that allows you to specify an area to automatically be filled in with objects? I don't think too many people use that feature because it KILLS your planting meter -- for some reason. As far as I can tell, most planting in the top courses are done singly. Fortunately, you can do something called "spam planting" on PC to make things go faster. Not sure if this works on console.
When you place a single object using the editor, the entire screen gets updated and redrawn... which can take several seconds. That makes planting super slow. But if you move around the screen while quickly and repeatedly pressing the "plant" button, the screen doesn't have a chance to update. You can literally place objects as fast as you click the button. When you stop, or pause for more than half a second or so, THEN it does the update and screen refresh. If you want to play Controller Twister you can even reach with a thumb or finger to press the rotate button while you are spam planting.
One downside to this technique is that you can't bury items. Well, you can choose a height, but all items you spam plant will be at that height, which won't work on hilly terrain. I think some designers do a trick where they spam plant at surface height, then single plant and partially bury stuff, around the edges.

By "mass planting" Im referring to the Multi-Object planting menu option. Spam planting doesn't work on console. I never use Multi-Object planting for planting trees, bushes, plants, etc I always do those individually to save on meter, whether partially buried or surface planted. But I was mainly referring to partially buried grasses as thats what the earlier post was suggesting. Ive partially buried loads of trees, bushes, plants on my courses but Ive never tried partially burying grasses. Singular grasses have such a small coverage that it would take me an eternity to partially bury singular grasses, as Im one of the slowest designers anyhow. Fair play to those who can pull it off as it looks great.
