Shadow Oaks CC is officially open! This flat countryside styled course is my entry into the Parkland/Golden Age of Design Contest and is my 6th course in PGA Tour 2K21. Built from a completely flat plot, Shadow Oaks has definitely been my favorite course I have ever designed. Tight fairways, tough greens, and trees around every corner are what gives this course its difficulty. I went into this contest without ever trying to make an actual parkland/country-club type of course. I took inspiration from courses such as Cherrybrook by MattF as well as real life courses like Winged Foot (West) and Oakmont. A lot of holes at Shadow Oaks have hints of these courses, paying tribute to the American style of parkland course designing.
Shadow Oaks has quite a simple layout and playing style. Most of the holes involve risk/reward opportunities and all 4 of the Par 5’s are able to be reached in two shots (in the right conditions). Par 3’s vary from short to long with some fun slopes including a definite hole-in-one chance on the island green 16th. Just stay out of the trees and you have a good chance to go low!
The planting on this course is very simple: There isn’t any planting! Okay, that’s not exactly true. There is a long ditch that runs across the course on holes 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17 adding some strategy and danger to the course. This is basically the only place I really planted, the tree lines have no grass or bushes under them. I took this inspiration from Cherrybrook because I liked the clean look of the trees and green grass. I didn’t use this technique because I think my planting was bad, I used it as a way to try a new look and see how it turned out. It has been done on purpose and not because I hate planting!
Best Tee/Pin Combos:
Best Combo - Blue Tee/Pin 1
Toughest Combo - Blue Tee/Pin 3
Don’t hit very far? - White Tees/Pin 1
(Pin 1 is the pin for the best possible experience on the course. Tough pins, easy pins, middle pins, it’s got them all. Pin 3 is the toughest pin. This pin sits in the most inconvenient spots, giving you tough carries with barely any helping slopes.)
Feel free to provide feedback, all feedback is welcome! I hope you enjoy your round at Shadow Oaks CC!
