Anyone else get into a rut where nothing seems to work? I mean, I'm 100% a rookie, with only 2 courses published (neither super hot), but I've been messing with the same plot for about 2 months now and I'm just getting nowhere. I've been playing a ton of courses lately looking for inspiration and just feel like there's so much out there that was just built for the sake of being built, although the National Treasures courses were a real bright spot—inspiring stuff! My perspective has been (so far anyway), that as I'm laying down holes each one is "memorable", and needs to feel unique and purposeful, and not just filler to get from one hole to the next. Maybe this is the wrong tack, and/or maybe I'm overthinking it. I was watching a video earlier and something resonated with me whilst in this design funk—I'm paraphrasing here but: "you need to get in the designer and design, even if it's not something great, you should still do it". I think it was mattf27 in one of his Joy of Planting videos (but I could be wrong). What's everyone else's opinion here, is design burnout a thing? How do you get through it, just push on with something for the sake of doing something (and maybe not publish it?), or wait for the muse to return?

Yep it’s a real thing for sure but if you like the most of us here will push through and get rejuvenated back into the swing of things. I try to balance as best I can to avoid burn out. I love competing so I joined the tours and that’s a lot of fun to! Don’t always look at other designers courses here for inspiration. Look at real life courses even if you never played there. For me (and I still consider myself new) I set a goal of getting better and or learning more with each course I’ve made. If you are spending way to much time on a plot without much progress then scrap it! We all do it. 😁

True stuff !
3 versions into the game, 30+ designs, occasionally I just toss a project aside and start anew.
My 'classc geometric' may never come to fruition, and my most recent 'accept' lifted a defunct local course's routing and gave it a completely new environment.
And there's always the reality that the creative grind isn't for everyone. I songwrite & sketch as well.

Designer burnout is real. Happens to everyone, even the best in the game. As HoneyBadger said, sometimes looking at real courses can give inspiration. Sometimes it’s just a nature picture or a plot of land you drive by on your way to work or shopping, where you think…that’s a cool look. Maybe I can recreate that in game and plop a course on it. Or an actual course where you completely change the environment.

Sometimes just by changing the theme on a particular plot can reinvigorate new ideas. Im no expert, only 2 courses, but it has helped develop ideas for me.

The burnout is definitely real. I am stuck there now especially since I feel like there is nothing "new" to try. The designer hasn't had any updates from release and that to me is helping lead to that burnout. I try to be inspired by designs I see or courses I play, but I also find it difficult to invest the amount of time right now when I'm not creating something that I truly have in my head. One very specific example is certain styles of bunkering, fescue and textures.
This leads to my next point that I plan on putting together an expansive designer wish list at the one year anniversary that hopefully gets considered for the next gen/next version of this game.

I usually get burnout every few courses, I can’t remember how many full courses and partially built courses I’ve deleted from feeling like they aren’t that good and feeling frustrated with not being able to design out of the problem I created lol. I end up going out and playing real golf, usually that sparks an idea. The other “post burn out” spark is seeing a picture of a golf hole, somehow an entire idea of a course comes from see a picture. Latest spark came from seeing a picture of May River Golf Club.

I've had a couple of months off the designer and have about 6 at various stages. My Nile River one looks like it has some momentum again.

I just started back in the designer last night...the last time I was in it was to publish my parkland contest course back in September. I ran out of ideas, and frankly, didn't even want to mess with anything in there for a long time. Burnout is real.
Even jumping back in last night to design a bit for fun, I could only really do it for like an hour before running out of steam again.

Yeah, Same boat. 2 publishes, final stages of 3rd. Gets tedious and soul crushing especially on consoles. I like to watch stream play throughs whataboutameibi or B101 to inspire me by seeing finished products. I also start my next course when I get burnout to just see a different plot. Take a couple days off, move the tees around for different looks, don't get 'attached' to certain holes - tear them out and create a new hole, it can give you an 'aha' moment and kickstart you again. Good luck and keep seeking advice. Hope this helps, Bob.

My problem is that I know how much better I’ve got as a designer lately and now I’m struggling to publish a course that’s slightly less than as good as I can make it, but I’m always finding things to tweak.

I'm working on my 9th course so far this year and for me, I design a hole or two every weekend. I've had some weekends where I'll get 4 or 5 holes done. By doing it that way I don't seem to get as burned out designing courses. For me, designing courses is a really fun hobby. Try not to get all caught up in being the most recognized or distinquished designer. We already have those designers... so just keep on doing what you're doing and if you like it, well that's all that matters. I'm just happy if people play it and enjoy it.

Burnout is real here. I was a Nationally competitive age group marathon runner when I found designer 3-4? years ago while rehabbing a back injury. After finishing Andongo Village 6 months ago (and +30 lbs), I decided this game (playing and designing 30h/week) wasn't conducive to a healthy lifestyle for me. Joined a golf club (HCP down to 6) and a gravel bike group. I'm sitting on a really good plot- don't know that I'll ever get back the desire to put meaningful time into it- but it doesn't matter at all as the design community has never been better with the active designers turning out phenomenal courses on a weekly basis.

I can only do 1-2 courses a year now. So many great designers out there I don't feel the need to contribute to the community. Only doing some niche designs now that I enjoy rather than slogging through 1M clicks to flatten a course

It's a daunting task, clicking "New Course" when there is a screen full of half completed ones there already.
