Wilde Venen GC - Wild Ferns GC Design limitations and constraints
The location: A main consideration was to choose a specific location for the course to draw inspiration from the landscape to have a clear vision of the course layout and planting requirements. De Hoge Veluwe National Park was chosen. There were a number of reasons this national park was chosen: i) When researching the best courses in Holland they were all situated inland and whilst it was tempting to create a links course, my research suggested otherwise. ii) Almost a third of Holland is at sea level and the national park has low lying areas that directly reflect this. iii) The landscape of Heathland and Fenland was an ideal and plausible planting approach. iv) On the edge of the National Park, farmland is evident and ideally frames the boundaries of this course. v) Keeping the course relatively flat became a challenging constraint as this limited elevation variety Important planting considerations for a course in Holland
Windmills: There are over 1000 windmills in Holland. They are an iconic structure and immediately gives the course identity. Canals: Understandably, with Holland being low lying, there are a number of canals in the country and therefore it was important this was reflected on the course. Holland flag: The Netherlands flag is Red, white and blue which are canvas colours and can be seen throughout the course. Coloured houses: A common feature in Holland and there is a recognition of this in the design. The course
Wilde Venen GC is a fictional course based in Holland. It is a challenging Par 71 set in Fenland marshes and dry heathland. The strategic design allows options from the tee and on many holes positioning on the fairways is an important consideration to approach well-guarded pins. The greens place an emphasis on accuracy to avoid being on the wrong side of the hole. In line with my other courses, it offers a tough but fair challenge. Yardages: Par 71Red: 6,986 Gold: 7,157 White: 7,292 Black: 7,366 I hope you all have fun playing it.

Red fast lessons lowered to €1.99. 😂😂. Looks great, I’ll give it a go in the AM. And sign me up for whatever the biggest red fast lesson package is!

Just gave it a play. Definitely felt like Holland and all the 'extras' helped as well - they looked great. The grass through the water was really well done and planting in general must have taken you ages. 17th was my favourite hole - tough but looked and played great. Congrats on a very enjoyable course and you can tell it was designed by a plat player

Really liked this one Cotty. Thought you nailed a lowland, heathy vibe. External environment was also great with the housing and the farmland. Thought the planting around the water was lovely and bunkers were excellent as Charlie mentioned. Tough but completely all out in front of you. Congrats - great course.

When the view from the first tee loaded a big cheesy smile went on my face. That smile never went away. Such a fun environment! Love the Holland flag hole markers, I hope that’s something even Ben can appreciate. 🤣

You crushed it! The planting in the grassy wetland areas was absolutely top notch. I had to zoom in to a few areas to see how you pulled it off. I was really impressed for the entire round. Good luck in the contest sir! This was great.

Thanks for all the comments. It's usually at this point I start to feel guilty for not putting in the same time and effort that others do to play the courses and write such well considered comments. I wish I had time to play all the courses as they come through, and maybe I will set time aside this time to do just that.
The designing community remains strong and its fantastic to see.
