Greetings All,
Lizard River Resort GC is now published.
This fictitious resort course is set on a wide shallow loop of the Lizard River, which is a tributary of the Lennard River not far from the King Leopold Ranges in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Other bodies of water on the course are storage ponds to hold water from the wet season to mitigate against the dry when the river levels are low in August to October.
The wet season is from November to March. The resort course is best played between April and July when the river levels are still good, the temperatures are nice and the course is relatively green. The course is currently depicted as what it would look like in May/June.
Apart from a nice course in some picturesque Kimberley country settings, the Lizard River Resort also offers swimming pools, tennis courts, and a 9 hole pitch and putt course. A light aircraft landing strip and maintenance facilities are across the river from the 6th and 7th holes. There's a sealed road from the airstrip to the resort around the back of the river loop.
The course pictures below were taken in May last year in both early morning and late afternoon, mostly using a drone.
Default time is 7:30am, however there is plenty of light and only 3rd, 11th and 17th greens have few shadows.
Hope you enjoy the pics and your rounds
Scorecard
Hole 01 - Par4
A slight dogleg right Par 4 with gentle slopes from right to left, including the green. The tee is slightly elevated above the drive landing zone, leaving the second shot almost level with the green. The radio tower in the background belongs to ABC radio which broadcasts to many areas in the Kimberley.
Hole 02 - Par 3
A short to mid-iron Par 3 playing slightly downhill which tees off over a small pond. The green slopes from back to front and has a slightly elevated area back right.
Hole 03 - Par 4
A sharp dogleg left Par 4 that is downhill about 7m from tee to green. It is well bunkered on both sides, and the waste bunkers on the inside of the dogleg can come into play if trying to cut the corner. The green slopes from left to right towards the river with a lower level on the right.
Hole 04 - Par 5
A dogleg left Par 5 that is downhill some 11m from tee to green. The main feature is a large river ravine that requires a second shot of more than 80m to reach the fairway segment on the other side of the ravine bridge. The green slopes mainly right to left away from the river with a slightly elevated back area of the green.
Hole 05 - Par 3
A mid-range Par 3 that is uphill at about 12m from tee to green. However, you can still see the top of a Pin flag cut at the back from the tee area. The green slopes from back to front, with the back half of the green being slightly elevated.
Hole 06 - Par 4
This picturesque downhill Par 4 has significant waste like bunkers on both sides of the fairway and runs down along a river cliffline leading to a generous green with bunkers at the back. The back half of the green is slightly lower than the front of the green, so a measured approach shot is required when the Pin is cut on the top front level.
Hole 07 - Par 5
This Par 5 follows the river and bends around to the right. The drive is from an elevated tee on a river cliff down to the fairway that slopes from left to right towards the river. Best to stick to the left side of the fairway where the slope is less severe. The green is surrounded by the river on three sides.
Hole 08 - Par 4
A shortish slightly uphill Par 4 that is driveable from the Red tee and from the White and Black tees in favourable tail winds. The green has three tiers from back to front and is heavily guarded with bunkers. The house on the hill behind the 8th green is where the Resort Manager lives.
Hole 09 - Par 4
A sharp dogleg left around the pond that surrounds the resort pool area. The nine hole pitch and putt course is off to the right of the 9th hole green on the other side of the small pond.
Resort Pool Area
The Resort pool area has a nice view of the 9th green and a lovely outdoor area to relax with a cold beer from the pool bar.
Hole 10 - Par 4
A fairly straight drive with a second shot dogleg left 80m+ over water to an island green with about 30m of fairway. A couple of sandbar islands are also nearby although these can move around during change of seasons. The bridge into the resort (behind the tree to the right of the green) is also used by carts to get between holes on the back nine and front nine.
Hole 11 - Par 3
This longer Par 3 tees off over scrub with water down the left and a long bunker down the right between fairway and cliff. The large monolithic mountain visible in the background left of centre is known as "Sleeping Beauty". With a bit of imagination: the rise on the left is her hips with her right leg bent over her extended left leg; the rise on the right is her head with her hair flowing down to the right; her right arm is the ridge that runs from top right to bottom left in the middle - maybe
Hole 12- Par 4
A slightly uphill Par 4 with a wide driving area surrounding a couple of bunkers in the middle of the fairway giving the player a choice of left or right side of fairway. The elevated green slopes significantly away on the left and rear of the green.
Hole 13 - Par 5
This long Par 5 follows the river bending slightly left to the driving area, then straightening up for a second shot to a green perched atop a river cliff. Hard to reach in two from the black tee except with a good tail wind. A good approach is needed to a fairly narrow green entrance.
Hole 14 - Par 4
This short Par 4 with water down the left side has a small inlet segmenting the fairway. Usually a 3 wood off the tee is the go unless a good tail wind and forward tee allows you to hit past the inlet to the second segment of fairway.
Hole 15 - Par 3
This short to mid-iron Par 3 across water features a long narrow green that runs diagonal from the waters edge on the right to the further back and higher on the left. The green has several tiers from right to left.
Hole 16 - Par 4
A straight downhill drive with a second shot to a significantly elevated green. The raised right edge of the fairway offers generous guiding of errant tee shots back towards the middle of the fairway. But make sure you hit the dance floor with your second shot lest you end up in the bunker guarding the front right two thirds of the green.
Hole 17 - Par 4
A sharp dogleg right Par 4 with a downhill drive and an uphill second shot. With favourable winds cutting the corner over the scrub is definitely an option.
Hole 18 - Par 5
A dogleg right Par 5 with two bodies of water and a road to play over. The tee shot drive of 150m over the river to reach the fairway from the black tee, and a cart ride over the bridge to the fairway. Then if your drive is long enough, a second shot over the small lake to the green. If your drive is not long enough or the winds are unfavourable, there is a layup area of fairway on the other side of the sealed road.
