Hi folks Hope you’re well.
I mapped a local course recently and pulled it into 2K21. It’s a beautiful course to play in real life but it doesn’t translate to the game very well.
By that I mean the fairways and greens, whilst playing fine in the game, just look too small. The main thing though is that it’s just so flat, in real life it’s a nice and relaxing parkland course, in the game it could be seen as just too boring.
What’s your thoughts on using the lidar course but doing some major sculptural “improvements” in the game to make it play more interestingly? I suppose that could happen in real life ... if I won the lottery and bought the course. 😁
I obviously couldn’t call it lidar as it would be radically changed but I quite like the feel and look of the course so would like to do something with it.
Any thoughts for discussion would be most welcome. 👍
Cheers.

Thanks sandsaver, I suppose because I only know how to pull a course into TGC19 and 2K21 by following the instructions on Chad’s site 😊 Any deviation from that could cause my brains to shrivel up and roll out of my left ear. Haha.

I guess in the end is what is your objective? Is it to recreate your favorite course, or create a fun course to play? I would think they are different objectives.
I'm also seeing that my local club that I'm recreating is a little weaker on the greens since it plays much harder in real life. But you also have to consider that you need to have legal pins. If I try to modify the greens it would likely be very difficult to have 4 legal pins.
For now I'm leaving it as is. I know that the Lidar can be accurate, but also has some areas where it isn't exact. In those areas that I know well (I've played that course over 100 times) I make slight adjustments to make sure it is closer to real life than the lidar represents.
Interesting topic though.

Lidar can seem too flat and uninteresting for a few reasons.
First, what is the vertical resolution of the data? If it is greater than 50cm, the course will be missing some of the nuance and undulations on the fairways and green complex.
Second, Did you select the proper criteria from NOAA (this usually isn't a problem from other repositories)? You must make sure you select METER as the unit of measurement for BOTH vertical and horizontal or your course will end up being mostly flat.
Third, The in game horizontal terrain resolution is rendered at about 2m which results in an overall smoothing effect to the terrain.
All courses in game play much easier than in real life. This is just how it is.

Thanks for your thoughts guys.
The lidar data was only available in 2mtr. It doesn’t seem that there is very accurate data available for the uk, or at least I haven’t found it yet.
The course I’m doing is a beautiful course in real life so I might just use this an exercise in planting. I’ve not done a parkland style course in the designer yet so it’ll be an interesting learning curve. It’s keeping me occupied and off the streets anyway 😊
I think I’ll adjust the fairways and greens to try and make it play more interesting in the game and not call it a lidar course.
The reason I’m doing it is because years ago I played it in a charity fund raiser for a UK cancer charity. My father had just passed away from cancer so I entered the longest day challenge with two friends. We had to play 4 full rounds, back to back, in one day. As we don’t hit the ball the straightest I ended up walking 18 miles by the end of the day...and got sunstroke. Hell of a memory though. 😊
I was just interested to know what lidar designers feel about changing a course up after importing it. If major changes are made it obviously can’t be called lidar but I wondered what the general opinion was.
Cheers gents.
