This is in the very early stages, but I think I have enough of a direction to share it. I've been trying for, I don't know, a year and a half maybe, to rework my old Leelanau Bluffs course. The intended setting for that course was the Sleeping Bear Dunes area of northern MI, but with the stock delta theme it was a bit of a stretch.
I've worked on various different routings and themes for the course, but none have stuck until recently. I finally had an inspiration of both a course style as well as a plot setting that made sense, and I just had to work and rework the routing for a few weeks to get it to make sense. WIP pics are at the end, but first here's some inspiration.
There are still elements of the original inspiration, which is the Sleeping Bear Dunes:
No screenshot, but I'm keeping the winery/orchard that runs along the 1st tee. The wineries are one of my favorite non-nature elements of the area!
I also was thinking of Petoskey State Park as some inspiration, as well, because I love the dunes meeting the lake:
The plot had an inlet of water that some holes were on, including the 18th hole, so I had to figure out a way to use it without blowing everything up completely, which in that case it would make more sense to just start a new course. My inspiration comes from some of my favorite towns along Lake Michigan, and the inlets that lead from the lake into the towns. These have always been cool areas to me, with iconic lighthouses, and large dunes surrounding the area. Here are a few of my favorites.
South Haven:
Holland:
Grand Haven:
The last thing to figure out is what kind of course would fit best in this location of dunes.I've been thinking about Coore and Crenshaw courses lately, and Sand Valley immediately came to mind. I think if you surrounded with Sand Valley with water, it would feel a lot like either shore of Lake Michigan:
So that's the complete list of inspiration. I haven't planted anything yet and I'm just getting started on hole designs, so I imagine I might still tear apart everything. I found the Coore and Crenshaw style to be confounding, so it's going to take me awhile to figure it out. Here's what I have so far, with 4 holes partially designed, and some lighthouse work:
