Disclaimer: I am NOT trying to sway any judging, so judges read at your own discretion but also not going to say too much indepth.
So I played all 45 courses (main and side competitions) published for World Cup and sort of ranked my top 20 favorites. This is more my personal subjective favorites and not at all how I think they should ranked. I have some courses that I know are objectively better or more proficient lower then others I just generally like from my own view point. I thought I would share and offer a thread for others to drop their top 10 or 20 courses.
And there are NO shots to the courses not on this list. Honestly it's amazing with over 40 entries there is NOT a bad one of the bunch. Great work by everyone in this competition, I have really enjoyed playing all of these courses and learned a lot just tooling around everyone's hard work! So here's my Top 20 List:
20. Breton bay Golf Course - mattyfromcanada ) / Wren Trails - junyuh
Ok I'm starting off by cheating! But I wanted both of these courses on my list.I love the restraint using the cliffs sparringly Matty chose here so when they are brought in it's stricking and effective. Junyuh's unique course here really makes you think every shot and is quite a fun challenge to figure out.
19. Shadowthorn - gcsinsane
I love the use of the open, low planting landscape to make some very creative hole designs. From the couple times I've played and watching the many playthroughs by others no round is played similar here.
18. Deschutes River Club - jwfickett
Being an Oregonian and someone who lived in Bend myself for a couple years I will say Jwfickett pretty much nailed the environment here despite never visting. I love how subtle the land movement seems from the tees but as you play you feel the movement more then you realize you may.
17. Kachina Canyon Trail - mattf27
As always it's a joy to watch Matt build these courses on Joy of Planting. I love the flagstaff look myself and Matt is the best at minimalism yet a course never feeling empty.
16. Te Amo - Q
I liked Q's Design League entry of this but was mazed at his progression from that to this whole 18. Great work utilizing the G R O U N D G A M E!
15. Pinnacle Ridge - VctryLnSprts
Despite soem of the routing issues that caused a bit of a hubub this is just a damn fun course to play (even if you play it incorrectly). The look is subtly nailed as well.
14. Rocky Plateau - @babybull
Top knotch land movement and rockwork that obviosuly influence the course design without every feeling artificial. Such a organic flow to this course that's subtle but effective.
13. Camp Lonesome - tpetro
The king of the "rugged" courses Petro's course here still has some shine with the impeccable low water areas and sneaky good planting scheme. Love the weird ass florida man easter eggs as well.
12. Usonian Links - grovey31
As an architect I love the FLW inspiration in the concept and the beautiful modern club house. Wide open plots that play interesting and dynamic are deceptively tricky but pulled off beautifully here.
11. Uvongo Beach GC - nitro22
A jungle is pretty difficult to make well in this game but nitro pulls it off exceptionally here. OB is rough but really demands you to figure out the holes and how to play so you steer clear of them. Loved the club house as well. (For some reason I can't tag Nitro)
10. Holly Point [Alternate] - jswift
A course ripe with fun shots. Utilizing the land can create some great approaches, failure to do so can create some interesting challanges. The sand dune look is pulled off so well too.
9. Marloew Heath - gamesdecent
This course is a master class in exceptional subtlty. The course doesn't leap out to the golfer to be noticed but when played it shows off it's skilled design nicely.
8. Wingspread Prairie Club [Alternate] - scottish67
Back to the FLW influence and just WOW on the Falling Water remake halfway house. The club house is brilliantly made as well. But the buildings are only half od the story with this great course that looks and plays exceptional.
7. Montauk Fields Club - TannerBronson
A challanging and engaging puzzle of a course. There's tons of fun to have trying to figure out what type of shot to hit pretty much ever swing on this course.
6. GC Camps Lumineux - ChrizZcE
My jaw was literally dropped my entire first round playing this course. The town across the canyon, the details around the hoels themselves are pulled off so skillfully here. This course isn't ONLY eye candy eitehr as there's defintely strategy involved in the golfing.
5. Sussex Downs - digitalbunny
This course is just a gd blast to play with it's bold land movement. So many interetsing and unique decisions to be made while playing, or just grip and rip and see where you end up. Either way much fun is to be had!
4. Harrier Creek - SindreRev
We already know Sindre is going to bring the wow factor on his views but still I was amazed playing this. He sort of lulls you with his early holes that are stricking before the middle run that shake you abit from your amazement and require you to make some more difficult decisions where to land.
3. Kukimbia kwa Fisi - reebdoog
The OG brought it with this African themed course. The star is defintely the gorgious pride rock in the center of the plot but the way the plot itself feels so natural is the sneaky costar. The feel that the course is worked in the existing land is pulled off brilliantly here, and the course constantly keeps you guessing.
2. Cape Clements, Tanzania - Heisenberg
Heisenburg is quickly becoming one of my favorite designers in the community and I think he is just getting better. This course is just stunning and has an organic flow to it that feel incredibly natural.
1. Strathlorne - b101
I wanted to not be predictable and put Ben #1 but damnit if this course isn't one fo the most technically sound I've ever played. It has it all with engaging strategy hole to hole, multiple unique environments that still are cohessive and still some wow factor with the breath taking cliff holes. Just class class class from Ben. This course also sticks with you, I HAD to play all four pins when this was released because I just kept thinking about the course after each round.
