Welcome to the Oregon high desert, just outside the city of Bend, in the heart of the Deschutes River valley. My entry in the 2021 TGCT World Cup of Design is Deschutes River Club, a 6850 yard par 71 that weaves among tall pines, scrubby underbrush, and ancient inland dunes.
Thank you to all of those involved running the competition, especially mayday_golf83 for putting together a great contest and everyone who is volunteering to judge, stream, and promote. Special thanks also goes out to jayraygun for designing this fantastic logo. Final thanks goes to jwtexan for convincing me to enter this competition and publish a new course, which is rare for me these days.
Suggested default firmness and speeds. Northeast wind is the most fun, West wind is the most difficult, but the orientation and width of the holes allow for a mix of hard and easy holes no matter the wind direction or speed. Not meant to be a terribly challenging course, but can be sneaky tough around the greens.
Plus routing maps for the nerds:

When I just joined the community, one of the very first courses that I discovered that stood out to me was Golden Isles Beach Club with it's ingenuitive but insane greens. I was excited to see you were participating in WCoD with me and then was even more excited when you unveiled you were making a Bend, OR course as I live only a couple hours from bend and love it there.
This is a wonderful course you have here, Once again the greens can be cranked up to frightening levels!
wish you the best of luck in the competition! your courses always leave a lasting impression on me

Wonderful little track you built here. Front 9 wasn’t pretty but managed to get it back to E on the back. Really liked the environment and the contours. Hit 73% of GIR but damn if I wasn’t on the wrong side of a ridge or slope on half of them. Can’t comment on the bunkers because luckily I didn’t hit any but I thought the wooden posts was an interesting choice. Overall well done and good luck in the competition
This one's a beauty... ground movement is stunning. Great work Fickett, good luck in the contest!
Blacktail Creek (DT 2024) - Team Matty (runners-up) The Hairy Lemon (collab with whodatmatt34) Old Kennebunk River (WCoD 2023) Jacquard Causeway (CC 2023) Elstead Heath GC Pequawket Basin GC (NT 2022, not good)
The sculpting was great, and the default lighting showed it off well. The posts in bunkers and near some tees was a nice touch of detail that didn't cause any problems for me. The overall look of the course was nice, but I really enjoyed the greens. Very solid stuff bro!
Thanks to all who have played and streamed so far. Always a joy to see others thinking their way around my courses. I figured the lumber walls would be polarizing but I like the look for this style of course and I felt they would help visually set the course apart from all these other great entries. Happy for feedback on them or anything else you liked or didn't like about the course. Plenty of low scores out there so I hope that corresponds with an enjoyable sentiment.
Beautiful golf course here Job and I had a great time playing it today. I'll certainly be back again to play the other pins and I look forward to seeing this on the TGCTours schedule at some point in the future. Good luck in the contest!
For those that previously played Golden Isles Beach Club, you'll note the greens at Deschutes have bold contours but are not nearly as penalizing. Did you find the greens on this course to be too challenging, just right, or did I dial it back from GIBC too far? I tried to incorporate feedback without abandoning my calling card. Eager to read some judging scorecards and feedback but until then, chime in with your spiciest critiques.
Needless to say, I enjoyed my 58 at the excellent Deschutes.
I am surprised you published and suggested the default conditions? Default green speed of 152 does a great job of taming them significantly. From what I saw, they can quite comfortably handle higher speeds. Bunker posts were an interesting and nice touch. They were very prominent on one fairway bunker on the back 9 (hole 10, shortish 4), which was directly responsible for me leaving driver in the bag and taking out 3w instead. All good, but I did wonder how I might feel about it if I did hit driver there and end up in the bunker, up against the posts with no way to advance the ball forward, or perhaps even sideways.

bubbadave: Truthfully. Give me a 170 over a 135 any day.

sroel908: And as someone who's rangered/scheduled hundreds of courses, trying out a wide range of conditions, I can say with certainty that green speeds do have an impact and definitely matter.

sroel908: Green firmness is more about how the ball interacts with the putting surface when you hit an approach into it. A soft green is more receptive, and will allow more backspin than a firm one. A firm green will have less bite and more rollout.

meunier33: I have seen 135 greens that putt like they are 170. Therefore, we can conclude that green speed does not matter.
Nov 18, 2024 15:31:35 GMT -5
meunier33: Why isn't there a green firmness meter on the score bug? Green firmness matters much more than green speed.

meunier33: I still play this game like it was the game before 2K21. Up until this month I have never tried to change anything about how I play the game. It has made me worse trying to adapt also.

OldManGaming606: The biggest swing adjustment and best for competitive golf IMO, was 2k21 and addition of tempo.

Art Vandelay: each time the game has been issued (TGC, TGC2, TGC19, etc) the game play changes. Some more than others. You have to adapt. Or go away, like some have.

Wutpa: I think a lot of people here have figured out what your problem is, and it's not what you think it is.
Nov 12, 2024 15:23:34 GMT -5
meunier33: EG the best swing used to be hard and low and not a high swing like it is now.
Nov 12, 2024 14:51:27 GMT -5
meunier33: Im finally figuring out what my problem is though. I play the game like it used to work 4 or 6 years ago and I have trouble adjusting to how it now plays
Nov 12, 2024 14:49:57 GMT -5
zooby97: Is that all meunier33 does is COMPLAIN? Will you please ditch the game so I don’t have to see the complaints anymore, wow!
