Isle of Rum Golf Club

The Isle of Rum Golf Club was formed in the early 1900’s on the little known Scottish island of Rùm (Gaelic) which is situated of the West coast of Scotland just South of the Isle of Skye. Legend has it that the island got its name from the rum smugglers that used to bring their contraband in from the West Indies in the mid 1800’s. The course is connected to the main land by ferry, it has a road and rail link from the port to the only street of houses on the island, the line runs into the centre of the course between the 1st and 18th fairways. Main Street has the only pub on the island and the school children still play the old game of Hopscotch in the school yard. The two main industries on the island are fishing and whisky the clubhouse is shared with a micro distillery that makes its own blend whisky. The course has three tee positions and plays at 7366 yds from the tips. The first hole heads inland alongside the track then the course turns right out to the south of the island for three holes before turning again and running close to the coastline for the next four holes with the Atlantic Ocean being to the left of the 6th 7th and 8th holes. Beware of 6 and 7 as they have difficult carries across the coves with the waves crashing below. Hole nine tee is right on the edge of the cliff top and plays back towards the clubhouse so don’t step back to admire you drive, hole 10 heads out towards the sea again and hole 11 parallels the inlet back towards the Scottish mainland. The back nine has two very difficult par threes but they are compensated by a relatively easy short par 4 17th. Hole 18 is a par 4 that again parallels the rail track so beware of a hook. Go in the clubhouse and enjoy a dram or two of their golden nectar.

Thanks Karma great photos as usual I have no idea where my PC saves them to and even how I would get them on here. The images I put on were done on Xbox

Really enjoyed this course Les.
Some tough long Par 4’s. Standout hole was the uphill Par 4 over the cove, it’s not often you take a tee shot without being confident if you’ll make the carry or not.
Played the round thinking the course was real which is a compliment to your skills. Great job.

Since the update I’m never confident of making the carry myself, thank you for your comments. I started with an idea of the rail line and the village street then just try and make a believable course one that I could see myself playing in real life. The isle of rum is a real island off the west coast of Scotland, it hasn’t got a golf course on it as far as I know. 😂
