“Usonia” is a word that was used by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright to refer to the United States in general and more specifically to his vision for the landscape of the country. He was an architect that was connected with nature and the natural settings of his buildings and I am applying that same vision and mentality to golf course design. NextGen Golf Design’s Usonia Links is a natural course built on a fairly flat piece of land without any significant elevation changes. What it lacks in large features, it more than makes up for it in rumples and folds, humps and bumps. Drawing inspiration from Trinity Forest and other lower profile courses like the Rio Olympic Course in Brazil, Usonia Links utilizes the natural, bumpy terrain to maximize the use of the ground game and create interesting and bold contours in the fairways and greens. The course is meant to be played at maximum fairway firmness and fairly firm greens (please use default settings for each) and under any wind settings (medium or high winds would be suggested). The course yardage is lengthy but due to the firm conditions, it will play shorter. The clubhouse was designed to imitate Wright’s usonian style and the low profile roof lines mimic the low profile lines of the course. It was designed as a meeting place for the growing local community and is a way to connect the people of the community to the natural environment of the course. A fun 9 hole short course will be completed shortly as well. Enjoy! (more pictures coming soon courtesy of scottish67 )

I think Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic approach to architecture is very applicable to golf architecture. It definitely resonates in my work and that’s why I’ve named two of my own courses after his more famous houses Taliesin and Falling Water. His Usonian houses are some of his best work and encapsulate his broader vision for housing in America. This one is next on my list.

It's easy to expect this level of quality from you sir. Very solid use of this theme to create a very cool, unique environment. The texture work and color scheme worked great. The course played amazing, and the fairway sculpting really challenged the players management of rollout differences between driver and woods, depending on shot type choice from the tees. Every green's undulations flowed very well, and I was able to get some really good looks, even if I was slightly off the mark on my approach. Truly great stuff here. Great job and good luck in this contest!

I mean, it's alright, I guess.
Great course buddy and should be a contender. So much subtle stuff here that I'm sure I didn't pick up on first time around. Will get you some hole by holes once I've played more pinsets in return for your kind comments.

I'm glad you liked the environment and found some strategy in managing the bounce and roll on the fairways and approaches. Good luck to you as well!

You wait awhile for a WCoD course to drop and then 3 come in quick succession. Nice. It wouldn't be like a grovey course to test your mettle. I took my time to get going here but eventually found a bit of a groove on the back 9 to at least card a few birds. A very enjoyable test first time round and I'll be back for a 2nd round in higher winds soon. Nice to see group H join the party and in fine style too.

Course looks pretty straight forward until you actually start playing. The strategy needed is top notch. Well placed bunkers, fairway undulations that take you where you don’t want to be and green slopes that can really help or really be a pain in the arse if you don’t attack correctly. Managed a solid -3 but definitely had to work for it. Well done, sir! Will for sure be back for more. Good luck in the competition
