Facts (mostly) - Cuba has one golf course - Said golf course is largely maintained by hand due to lack of available heavy machinery - Approximately 300 Cubans play golf - Earth moving equipment is largely unavailable for building a new golf course - Foreign tourists who play golf in Cuba have trouble identifying where to hit their tee shots I've got my work cut out for me.

Yesterday I built a plot based on a piece of land I found near Havana. The routing quickly came together as I was finding green site after green site and then I roughly surfaced ideas for the first 7 holes. When I opened the plot this morning I realized none of these holes fit the type of course I want to build to help introduce golf to the masses in Cuba. Back to the drawing board...

I am the alternate who got Cuba. I'm risking more of a dramatic look with cliffs, beaches, and mountains. I really like the look of your plot and can't wait to see some holes on it!

Day 7 (I think) of scouring every square inch of Cuba for the perfect plot of land...and I may have found it. Ample available coastline? Check 15-30' tall sand dunes? Check Rock formations? Check Available land with an eery resemblance to another good golf course? Check Land sandwiched in between a pair of high end resort properties owned by a billionaire hotelier? Check Is said hotelier willing to spend the time and money to bring in proper construction equipment, exercise an option on an adjacent 80 acre parcel and re-route a local road if necessary? Check Is there a reversible course in my future? Who could say...

After 4 failed plots and routing plans...I've got one I don't hate. and the reverse option with measure tools... I want to thank HB for the auto generated surfaces. This will really help stretch our limited budget now that the Cuban government has nationalized the project. I hope mattyfromcanada is judging this contest because the fairways and greens are texture 24!

I'll have a reversable course coming out for a Facebook competition. It's pretty much done but not sure when the publish window will open as it was mid May but we are pushing it up to not be quite as close to NT. Should be late April or early May, but I can tag you when I do so you can give it some plays while you'll probably be in the thick of things with this course.
It's a fun challange to do it this way.

A few pictures as I continue to figure out how to make palm tree planting not look manufactured. The par 3 5th hole with the 4th green off to the left and the 6th tee box beyond the green. The par 3 14th is the shortest hole on the course and features a small green where you may or may not want to fire at the pin depending on the location and wind. This will also be the first time we reach the coast as 4 of the final 5 holes will bump against the Atlantic Ocean

TL:DRHoles most likely to be blown up: 1 and 7 Holes most likely to make it to publish as they stand today: 11 and 14 ---------------------------------------------- Final par 3 (220y 17th) is in the dirt. Just as important, I know have an initial hole idea surfaced in for all 18 holes. Two favorites that I cant see getting blown up are the 300y par 4 11th and 265y par 4 16th. I want 11 to make the player uncomfortable off the tee the way the 7th at The Old Course does for me. There's not really a perfect line to take off the tee and the green looks incredibly nasty (it's actually only 2% from front to back but it looks much worse). The super short 16th hole begs the player to go for it as it can be reached with a fairway wood in most winds...but the most prudent play might be mid iron off the tee and sticking the approach with a wedge.

Planting and sightline work continues From behind 3rd green, you can see what awaits on the 4th hole Tee shot on 4 From left of 4 green, you'll get a glimpse of the marsh beyond the road The 9th is 45* dogleg right with a blind tee shot. Still working on the sightline here but planting left of the tee and the dune well beyond the fairway should frame the angle of the tee shot.

TL:DRHoles most likely to be blown up: 1 and 13 Holes most likely to make it to final publish as they are today: 3, 4, 11 and 14 Holes planted: 3-10, 14 and 17 Greens sculpted: tap the brakes... ---------------------------------------- What a difference planting makes. I tweaked 7 a bit to introduce a narrows concept off the tee for this medium length par 5. Thread the needle with driver and you'll be rewarded with about a 200y approach to an infinity green.

TL:DRHole most likely to be blown up: 12 and 13 Holes most likely to make it to final publish as they are today: 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11 and 14 Holes planted: 1-11, 14 Greens sculpted: HA -------------------------------------- The planting continues...but we're getting there. Opening tee shot (planting will fill in on the left once I figure out settle on 18's approach/layup area...and clearly the palms on the right need some spacing lol) Above the first fairway with a look down 2 in the distance
