Montauk Field Club
Designed By Dylan Tanner Bronson
World Cup of Design 2021 Entry
The Montauk Field Club was formed back in 1903 by a man with the name of John Hebert. The founder was a businessman with the patent on plumbing parts and had factories across the country and overseas. The club started off as a Tennis club. However, Hebert wanted more for the club. He was looking to purchase property in the trading town of Montauk. Looking for fine parcels of land on the water was difficult and he knew that when creating the club. He found a T-Shaped piece of vacant land near the cape of town. Sprawling itself around the homes of Montauk, the land was venturous and sandy. Perfect for a golf course. In 1905, Hebert called in the renowned and famous golf architect, Donald J. Ross. He would design the masterpiece and finish it in 1907. Since the opening the course. The club went through some ups and downs.
In the 1920s during the depression. Not as many locals couldn’t afford the prestigious club. The club's membership plummeted from over 600 members, to 60. The Club would fall through years later in 1936. Nothing more than a small suburban street would be built down the center of the property for the time being. The old course was kept intact for many years, just slightly overgrown. Almost mummified. The bunkers, yet a little eroded were in perfect condition. Similar to the screens and fairways. Since the closing of the club, the State park has encroached around the town and sides of the course making it feel more excluded from the busyness of the long island.
A man by the name of Sam Gosden, a tech genius from Long Beach, pondered the idea of bringing the historic club back and making it a local gem once again. Gosden then would call in Dylan Tanner Bronson to restore and bring back the well preserved piece of art. With only a couple holes being rerouted and fixed to fit the modern game. The course opened back up officially in the spring of 2021.
Designers Note (JUDGES PLEASE READ):
Before I say anything else, I want to thank My friends Aidan Savage Sandra Kwasniak, and Sam Gosden for pushing me through the process to get this course done. Being a college student, having midterms, and going through a break-up at the time makes it a stressful environment to try and finish a videogame golf course. This course would not have been published on time if I didn’t have them on my side.
This course was inspired by many Donald J. Ross courses across the country. From Oak Hill to Seminole, to Inverness the characteristics were scattered across the course. Also, I was inspired by Thomas Petrocelli's Potunk course. Which I thought was a nice "kiss of death" move. Anyways, for example, the third hole on this course was inspired by 11 on Oak Hill’s West Course, and 5 at Monroe Golf Club. The course's green pads were mostly inspired by Oak Hill’s new East Course greens. Traditional back to front sloping greens, typical of Ross. Essex was also a huge inspiration for land movement and hole placement on parts of the course, especially 8, 13, and 17. And lastly the 11th hole was very, very much inspired by the New 5th at Oak Hill. My favorite designer of all time is Donald Ross and I feel like I have finally designed a course through the eyes of him and how he would design. Here are some picture of inspiration I had while designing.
Conditions:
Wind Speed: Medium Wind Direction: EAST (Gave west by accident. I know its too late to change) Everything else to default.
The Course:
Dedicated to my friends here at school.
Thank you, Judges!
Thanks for playing! Cheers!

really good work here sir!
While all of it was enjoyable and lovely I will say that the course really picked up steam heading into the back 9 and down the home stretch. More of that please! :-)

Absolutely loved the course Dylan, I'll be back many times to check out the other pins, and I could totally see us playing this on a Friday Night Fun stream with the greens at 187 just to be chaotic. It was great to see you publish at 153 and provide a challenge to the golfers even at that stimp reading. Sculpting and plot design are just pure class man. I can see this one going pretty far and contending.

Well that was awesome. The sculpting and hole layout was great stuff, but that goes without saying. Normally, I tend to pay a lot of attention to off course stuff. This course demanded my attention for every shot, so I'll have to look at the off course stuff on my next round. There wasn't one shot I can remember that an aim, grip, and rip approach would have benefited me. A couple of well placed kicker slopes here and there gave me a helping hand, but most of the time I ended up with the wrong angle for my next shot because of a poor shot or decision. This is definitely a prime tournament quality course because of the variety of outcomes of each shot. Cranking the speed up on these greens, like VctryLnSprts said, would compound the frustration at times, but would probably help in others. Congrats on the stunning publish bro. Very well done!

What a beautiful course. Great bunker positioning (I found more than a few is why i say that). Just a fun round all around. Loved the sculpting on the greens, really fun to try to find a way to get an uphill putt on some of them. I'll be back to play another pin!
