Hey Ben,
Had a quick round the other day and loved the course. Played another round today and took some time to really explore the really intersting set of environments this course travels through. In general I love the way you don't impose too much on the landscape. The holes sit so naturally on the land and you showed great restraint with bunkers so as to make it look like you really just highlight the natural features of the site. Nothing is forced or contrived. So many fun uncluttered green complexes with lots of humps, rolls and feeder slopes.
Hole by Hole:
Hole 1: sneaky tough opener. makes you want to hug it left. Both times I ended up in the left bunker and had to lay up. Hole 2: Another tough one. Really have to gauge the bounce to access the front pin. Hole 3: Love the green site tucked up on the ridge. Hole 4:Great skyline blind drive. Scary second shot but I like how you didn't crowd the green. The fun little hump in the front is a cool feature to use Hole 5: Its nice just have a wide open fairway sometimes. Green contours really make you think about the approach hitting the ground. Hole 6:Beautifully framed hole. Love little holes that tuck into the routing like this. Hole 7: Love the use of the ridge in the fairway and the approach is a blast. Hole8: Great restraint on the tee shot. Big time cabot cliffs vibes on this one. Fun to careen the ball down the fairway. Back right pin is insane. Hole 9: Love how the cant of the green really favours the drive along the cliff. Simple yet super effective strategy. Putted off he green and made double. Hole 10: Beautiful hole. Love the work in the forground. and the way the green sits on that ridge with the veiw through Hole 11: Great skyline green. Loving the different looks on the course. The visual connectivy to other parts of the course give this such a nice spatial quality to it. Something that I always try to do. Hole 12:Love the openess. Perfect for a long par 3. Got to find the right spot on the green though. Hole 13: Really cool to come back to the river on this one. Hole 14: So many options with Pin location on this one. Great looking split level tee shot. Sneaky green. Hole 15: Nice to engage the river in yet another way. Hole 16: Super fun shots finihing with a dicey shallow green. Great three shotter. Hole 17:All world hero par 3. Love the end of the earth feel to this one. Hole 18: Great way to finish with the cliff on the left. The hump at the green makes for so many interesting shots on either the second or thirds shots. Really fun feature. Love the back door appraoch to the back right pin.
As always you deliver a super immersive and strategically complex course. The big moves and the details work so well together. Awesome work Ben.

Damn, Rob - impressed how you've picked up on loads of the less obvious things like the tee shot on 9 and the silly opening to the back right pin on 18. Tried to mix up the in-your-face strategy with the subtle stuff a bit more on this one. Cheers for all the kind comments and would love to know what you might have done differently as well. Always trying to get better!
Hope you get some time in the designer yourself soon.

I loved the way you can hug the cliff 18 to set up what is arguably the coolest approach shot I've ever played.
And then proceed to three-putt. Stunning, just stunning.

Still in awe at how good this is. Chances someone releases a better course than this before the publish window closes? Probably unlikely. Fantastic work Ben!

I was going to wait until all of the buzz died down a little bit to give this one a playthrough and get a good look, but apparently there won't be any lull in excitement for this course, so I got a tee time. LOL
There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but what I can say personally is that this course has overtaken Black Salt Valley as my all-time favorite B101 course, and the scary thing is, it's not even close. There were things on this course that I caught myself just staring at, routing ideas that I thought were tremendous, and just a general quality and vibe that is pure class.
Again, just personal opinion and I would say this regardless of contest or not, but I think this course goes into my top courses in the entire game. Cheers for a great design!
(I could play 8 and 17 on a loop all day and be happy)

Not meant to say the others aren't nearly as good... just saying this course is amazing. No disrespect meant

I'm certain no disrespect was meant and I'm also certain the judges don't pay too much attention to the general comments of onlookers in each course thread. Nonetheless I just feel that displaying a blatant favouritism toward any course in the contest is a little bit unbecoming. But, that's probably just me.

Look through any of the past contest threads and you'll see a range of 'best course in the game', 'this will win hands down' etc. and it's always multiple courses in every contest. In a format where we're subjectively ranking courses, that sort of thing is to be expected and wouldn't worry about it. Certainly, I don't pay it any heed whether it's my course or any other.

Just felt the need to say that cd06's comments actually had the opposite effect on me. As a fellow competitor, I gained a lot of motivation from what he said and will push myself even more this week to finish even stronger. Thanks to cd06 and sorry to Ben and everyone else in the competition haha

It's not life or death, just a bit of fun at the end of the day. I could just have easily slipped on by and said nowt. A lot of effort goes into these designs and I'm sure every one of the contestants competing would be chuffed to win the contest. Worth remembering. Back to the golf.

I played this the day it came out but haven't had time to comment. This course had me grinning from ear to ear, it's definitely my favourite b101 course since black salt. This is the type of course I always hoped you would make and I appreciated all of the bold moves you made on it. My only critique is that there are quite a few times where the background scenery comes into view and since it has no trees it doesn't blend well with the environment you made. This is mainly due to the lack of options in the editor but I think there are a few places where angling the coastline differently could have blocked it out better. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the positive comments and you’re right about the lack of options in the editor. Honestly, it was impossible to do any more due to the fact that HB provide no autogen trees in Highlands other than the bush clumps which would have looked just as awkward. I even had to pull some tricks to shunt a load of planting off the edge of the plot on the right of 4th green to block out the worst of it. You may get it on the odd shot but I was at 100% meter and had done as much as I could - I wasn’t going to sacrifice any of the on course planting as that’s more important. It came down to ‘do you accept some empty space and keep the mountain backdrop or go to the island backdrop and lose them, but hide the empty space?’ Keeping the mountains is a decision I would make every single time.
