Hi All, Seeking help here / insight on a project where I'm recreating a golf course that closed in 2006 that was very meaningful to my family. Really doing everything I can to make some semblance of the what the course was like for my Dad in particular. For context I have downloaded Chad's LIDAR tool and am an amatuer level course creator with my time with 2k21 and TGC. Thanks Crazycanuck - for the tutorials! The course that I'm looking to recreate has several high res. satellite photos via google earth. The most recent LIDAR data of the area is from 2011 - so a full LIDAR recreation will not be possible (as they built a Cabelas and Walmart over the property in 2007) - yea quite unfortunate, it was a beautiful course. The course itself was remarkably flat, so at this point I'm just looking to get as accurate as possible layout in terms of measurements of the fairways, greens, sandtraps, ponds, etc through Open Street Map since that appears to be what works with Chad's tool. So 2 questions 1. Is there a way to view past year's satellite data on Open Street Map? (because I can't seem to find any ability to do so}.If not is there a way I can utilize the high res. satellite images of the course from google earth with the tool to automatically import the measurements? The other approach is to obviously use the measure tool in PGA or TGC, but I know that would take longer, and not be as accurate. I truly appreciate any advice, help, and insight here!  |

There wouldn't be any reason to use Chadstool if you can't use the lidar data and there isn't any old satellite imagery available on OpenStreetMap.
There isn't any way to automagically import data from Google Earth.

Have you checked all of the different background layers available in OSM? I've often found a great disparity in the different available images, which can make things tricky when a course has been renovated. It's possible one of the images is old enough to have what you are looking for.
If that doesn't work, then unfortunately you'll be doing it by hand.

I just did the same thing here. Only about 3 holes were wiped out by construction on mine. I pulled aerials from Google Earth and from the County GIS maps for reference. Just a suggestion if available. Sometimes they are better than Google Earth.
In my case, I was able to tag the approximate locations of the tees, bunkers, and greens in OSM. I actually made them bigger in most cases (with more splines) so when I go into the designer, I can move the points around and into position based on the elevations I see in 3D. It is much easier there than to reference an aerial on a different screen and to try and match it.
I sure wish I had ANY photographs of the course or a scorecard for the one I am working on. That would have helped dial in the yardages, but fortunately I did find it listed in some very old course finder websites. I was able to get the total distance from the tips there.

What course? Maybe someone can help you out. I don't think much help is needed. It's Peach Valley Golf Course in Spartanburg. I'm dropping the trees in now. The only "landscape" I have to deal with is the houses around the course! Too easy. In fact, I think my street cred here will go down when I post it. Just a nostalgia course for me and I have a hard time adding flourish that isn't there. Maybe I'm too much of a purist. |

Thanks for the help all -- revisiting this now... Seems like all the Open Street Map satellite photos are too old.
The best work around I have thus far, is to use Peak through and Google Earth satellite data- and trace the course onto course creator. Not ideal, but it's the only alternative I can think of.

I figured this out; Google Earth to Chadstool. I built a course in Baja, MX where no LIDAR or ARC data was available. Perfecting and writing an instruction guide but happy to share if needed sooner!

Also curious about this. There are a few areas that don't have lidar data id liked to do (Gear Heart Golf links in Gear Heart Oregon)

I've been on holiday. Working more on an instructional guide this week. The spatial reference mapping is the most difficult part, so need to refine that a bit more.

sandgroper; I found 13 second ARC data that would produce better results than using Google Earth. Working on the course file for you to upload/play (along with instructions on the build process for future course builds).
