Let’s create a thread for one of the most iconic franchises of all-time...
Super Mario!
Growing up I was always more of a 3D Mario fan (64, Sunshine, Galaxy etc) than 2D Mario. Until recently...
Got a Switch a couple of months of ago and I’ve been hooked playing the original on the NES. Such a great game. Then I found out there’s a Mario Maker 2 game where you can create your own super worlds and I’m now hooked on this. Anybody else got it? And what are people’s favourite Mario games?

For me it started with Super Mario Allstars that came bundled with the SNES that I got back in 1993. The games ooze quality and require quite a bit of skill and perseverance to finish levels, especially later on. My favourite of that collection was Super Mario Bros 3.
I remember being blown away with Super Mario 64 when I got it for the N64: playing an unbelievably well made platformer in a 3d environment was mesmerizing at the time, miles ahead of anything that I'd seen previoulsy.
I gave up on Nintendo after the N64, except for a DS that I bought in about 2009. the first party games are fantastic, probably the best of any platform: but they are always lagging behind when it comes to 3rd party games. Having a small handful of quality games just isn't enough for me to commit to a purchase nowadays. I have used the Dolphin emulator to play Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, and New super Mario Bros, all great games.

I've played most of the main Mario games and while they're always a good time I wouldn't consider myself a massive fan of them. That being said I still rate Super Mario World as the greatest video game of all time. Aside from Tubular it's about as close to gaming perfection as you can get and I still try to play through it at least once every year or two.

N64 was my first console and the lack of games compared to PlayStation cost it in the eyes of the public that Gen-War. Nintendo’s fault for sticking with cartridges. Didn’t bother me though. I actually preferred the lack of choice as it made me cherish those games more and complete them more than the once. GameCube, I lost a little interest, although looking back it has some great games. It was just at the time there were few too many experiments that I wasn’t ready for. Time has been kind to some of those games (Wind Waker, Double Dash, Mario Sunshine, Pikmin etc) and I actually enjoy them more now. The third party support was very bad once again though. The Wii sold shedloads but it was my least favourite system. It put me off gaming for years and I’ve only really played FIFA for my football fix and Golf Club for my golfing fix the last few years, until the Switch... I don’t know why, but I’m going through a 2D platforming love. Super Mario Bros on the NES online service kickstarted it. And then you have some excellent third party games for once. Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Horace, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair are just five fantastic 2D platformers from third party support off the top of my head. Seems third party support is happening a lot more with the Switch. There is literally too many games to play that I can’t complete them all haha. Anyways, back to Super Mario Bros. I’ve created and just uploaded half a super world (4 worlds, 16 levels so far) on Mario Maker 2 if anyone wants to play them. NES game style. Tried to make it so it starts easy and gets progressively harder. My girlfriend struggles with the first few stages somehow, so it’s still probably too hard at first. If anyone wants to give it a bash my Maker ID is: BFK-5MT-CMF Hopefully it’s even better than the original game. Hah. Who am I kidding? It’s not even close, but still give it a bash if there’s any Mario lovers out there!

Super Mario Bros 2 is just weird. Apparently it was originally a different game but they changed it because the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2 was deemed too difficult to release anywhere else. And it shows. Can’t get into it. Super Mario Bros 3 seems great but what I really love about the original is it’s arcade style of no saving. Once you lose your lives it’s game over and you have to restart from world 1. Game over is truly game over. You need those 100 coins to give you that extra life as you’ll be losing plenty near the end of the game. I suppose i can still enforce these rules on the other games. An enforced Hard Difficulty mode I guess. Super Mario World I still haven’t played enough of. Will complete 3 first before giving it a proper bash.

I think that’s one of the big appeals for the franchise, especially 1,3, and World is that you can play them however you want. 1 is a one sitting game no matter what, but with the warp zones it’s up to you how much or how little of the game you play. 3 and World are harder to play all at once due to their size but you can again bypass large chunks of the game if you just want to speed run to the end as quick as possible. To fully appreciate 3 and World though you really need to take your time and see it all as there’s just so much more variety across the worlds than there is in 1.

Yeah. I think I’m gonna complete 3 and World the standard way before seeing if I can complete it in ‘hard mode’ (without a game over or level skips). Booted it up earlier. Think I got to the second castle of World. Favourite level so far and I’m not usually a fan of vertical scrollers.

Still not managed to play through the original without getting a game over. Grrr. Best I got to is world 7-1 I think.
Playing through Super Mario Bros 3 and I’ve got up to world 5. Good game but think I prefer the original. I think I prefer the Donkey Kong Country games and Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair games I’m also currently playing through.

Super Mario World is a gem, played that game to death when first came out on the SNES. Donkey Kong Country I played alot too, didn't realised there was sequels until I saw then on the Switch recently.
