Cairn Dun, set in the Scottish highlands in the remote town of Cairn. A championship layout with Stunning coastal views make for an unforgettable experience as the course winds its way through the dunes, by the sea and through the town of Cairn. A great mix of challenging holes, although some par 5 holes are short don’t expect an easy birdie on these greens. With the wind blowing the course can play totally different day by day. The course has 3 tee sets and 4 pin locations with tour events in mind.
Hole 1 - Gateway
Fairly easy par 5 to start if you can avoid the water with the opening tee shot. A joint fairway with 18 split with water will give you the chance to create a line in to the pin.
Hole 2 - Punchbowl
A straight forward downhill par 3 with a good chance of birdie to be had, be wary of the green dropping off to the right.
Hole 3 - Groundhog Day
A tough long par 4 will test any golfer after an easy start to the round. Driver is a must to reach the green in two but with pot bunkers to the left and a fairway bunker in the middle, hitting fairway is a big ask. A long approach shot into a fast undulating green will make par feel like a birdie.
Hole 4 - Voyage
Driveable par 4 surrounded by danger if you take on the green from the tee. Laying up in the fairway is still a good play and will still leave a good chance of birdie on the cards
Hole 5 - Big Cedar
A short par 3 with water running alongside to the right, be careful of the green dropping off to the right. Good chance of birdie.
Hole 6 - Uprising
Par 4 with a downhill tee shot into a generous sized fairway, approach shot back up hill into a large green guarded by a waste bunker.
Hole 7 - Cliffhanger
Short dogleg par 4 perched on the cliff top, a left to right tee shot required to avoid run out off the cliff top. A good tee shot should leave a wedge into the green.
Hole 8 - Bay View
Short par 5 heading back towards town with the sea running along to the left. good chance of eagle with a good tee shot.
Hole 9 - Cairn Village
Possibly the most fun tee shot on the course, hitting downhill into the village of Cairn. A good drive will leave the short iron into a raised green.
Hole 10 - Lighthouse
Beautiful views from the tee of the par 5 10th hitting down alongside the rocky bay. Green is reachable in two if you find cut grass.
Hole 11 - Boathouse
Medium length par 4 with a decision to be made off the tee. Fairway is split with two bunkers and heavy rough, playing down to the left will leave the shortest approach shot. The green lies in front of the old boathouse.
Hole 12 - Dougal Farm
Short par 4 split between the sea and dougal farm. A good tee shot will leave just a flick with a wedge into a narrow green.
Hole 13 - High Tide
Possibly the most challenging par 3 on the course, guarded by bunkers with the sea to the left. A back right pin position can lead to disaster if the wind blows, be mindful that most of the green feeds into the back left
Hole 14 - Cairn Dun
Tough par 4 running alongside the sea with views of cairn castle in background. Good tee shot required with a difficult approach shot coming next, a undulating tiered green can easily turn to disaster even if you avoid the waste bunker to the right.
Hole 15 - Wee Lassie
This dog leg par 4 to the left starts the turn back towards Cairn town. An uphill tee shot followed by a short downhill approach shot.
Hole 16 - Ruins
Short par 3 playing over the old town walls, heavily guarded by bunkers with the green dropping off to the left.
Hole 17 - Sandwich
Short par 4 with maybe the most demanding tee shot on the course winding its way back through town, OB to the right and water all the way up the left. A testing undulating green to follow surrounded by bunkers.
Hole 18 - We head home
Par 5 heading back towards the clubhouse, 3 pot bunkers to the left and water to the right demands an accurate tee shot. Most of the green is guarded by a big bunker at the front.
