I noticed the trend seems to be on not revealing too much, which is basically the opposite of how my WIP threads go.
Rather than not doing one, I decided to try and make the most unhelpful WIP thread as I possibly have in me, while still being completely factual. Here's my first update.
Update #1
I made a plot. Decided to take a stroll and caught this wonderful view across the hillside!

Update #2 I liked the plot. I wanted to do Gil Hanse proud, just follow the land, not too many bunkers, keep them nice and small, nothing overly sculpted, more like little scabs dug out of the earth. Wide playing corridors, lots of movement on greens, short grass areas surrounding. Thoughtfully incorporate the natural waste areas.
(I trust you'll notice that I am speaking in the past tense regarding these design plans.)
(No, I don't trust that you'll notice, that's why I put that disclaimer in. And this disclaimer about that disclaimer.)
Picture:
I don't know what they grow on those trees. Or maybe the trees are just the things being grown? Whatever they are, there's a lot of them.

Best thread so far. Can the course live up to the hype?

I like the way you’re working this. No diggety.

Update #3 Turns out, the part of the plot where the golf needs to be played wasn't that good. Or I'm just not good at finding and routing golf holes over the land to look natural. I think the plot just wasn't great, but whatever the reason, I had to call an audible. The holes just weren't feeling right.
Picture:
I wanted to make an entrance sign with the name of the course on it, but couldn't find any satisfactory way to make letters on a normal sized sign. So I made an impromptu logo instead.
Let's pretend that you can't see it up close, and tell that it's two driving range dividers with the HB logo on it. It kind of looks good, doesn't it? (You better not say no!)
Inadvertently, it's not totally different than the logo for the course that it takes its inspiration from.

I'm so confused that I'm confused about whether I should be confused, or if I should just be confused about being confused...
Either way, I'm all in.

Update #4 The first design audible was to go bigger with the greens. It's hard for me to make bold contours on smaller greens, and I was feeling some LIDO inspiration, so the mower came out. So far I'm enjoying the results much better.
The second decision concerned the bunkers. I messed around with several styles, but I kept coming back to some bunkers I made on the 3rd hole.
I'll call them a mix between natural scab bunkers, and MacKenzie style. I hope there are no bunker scholars or MacKenzie scholars out there who find fault with my nomenclature.
Update on the updates: I think I have one more in me that won't provide much of any helpful information about the course at all, and then I'll have to take a break and build some more random crap to take pictures of.

I'm drawing out the useless tidbits of information as much as I can, but I'm still too early in the build and running out of material. Soon I'm either going to have to actually show the course, or just stop doing updates. Lose-lose all around.

Update #5: I have consulted my friendly local ecologist*, and they tell me this biome is called Chaparral. I've flown over a chaparral once, but never been to one.
*I don't know any ecologists, local or otherwise. Considering I live thousands of miles away, not sure a local would be very helpful anyways. My ecologist was google.

Did I get it?
You got the state correct.
More modern, less obscure (although that's subjective based on the person).

Update #6: Back when we used to watch TV, my wife and I would have HGTV on a lot. Because of Flip or Flop, specifically, I know that these small little ranch homes are not cheap. You want some green grass to go with that? You better have the budget. A green lawn and a pool? You might just be the biggest baller on the block!
Hopefully we don't see any of these on the foreclosure market anytime soon...

I've been thinking about the best way to describe the vibe here, in just one word...
Rustic? Maybe?
