When you are in the rough or in the sand and are faced with a shot that says 75-95 % or 40-60%, what is your thinking and does it change in various situations? Personally, I tend to use the higher % most of the time but I don't know why I do that. Sometimes I get burned using this approach. Any thoughts?

My understanding is the higher percentage applies when you make perfect contact, but anything slightly less than perfect will result in something closer to the lower percentage. So how you play the shot very much depends on the risks involved with not making a perfect contact/where you want to miss

It's just the way I handle/understand it as well...

I hate sand, I never know what I am going to do. The worse for me is those 7 yard shots that are at a 60% lie. Yikes, I could knock it close over over the green. Can never figure out the distance.

I figure the percentage right in the middle, because it gives you the best probability for success without risking too much. 75-95% - figure 85% contact 40-60% - figure 50% contact
Chances are you wont swing perfectly that you get the best percentage, and you probably wont swing so poorly that you get the lowest percentage. 9 and a half times out of 10 you will get something close to the median of the two percentages.

That's pretty much how I figure it too. If there's something nasty like water in the way then I go with the lower figure and accept the overshoot rather than go swimming.

I usually go a bit longer than middle percentage just in case I make an awful swing. I find that going long on most shots is better than going short.

Same here, I've always judged these shots using the middle percentage. If I'm in the sand with a 40%-60% shot range and the pin is 15 yards away (and the hole is pretty much even level with my ball), then I use a full swing on the 30-yard flop. I've thought of it as, if you swing at 100%, then your shot will go somewhere between 40%-60%, not always at top 60%. This is a good question and would be a good thing to test out.
