Now published the Old Links at Tilghman Bay, Inspired by the old Scottish links style courses throughput the UK coast. Plays at 7040 yards. For the best challenge play in High winds blowing south-west or south-east. Hole descriptions below and pictures below
Hole 1: Par 4 390 yards
The first hole finds you standing at a tee box adjacent to the clubhouse hitting across Tilghman Bay Drive to a narrow fairway operated by Bay Creek. The Tee show plays down hill so longer hitters can clear the creek but prevailing winds could come into play and make it more difficult. If you clear the creek you will have a short pitch or wedge top the elevated shared green which shares its dramatic slopes with hole 3.
Hole 2: Par 4 303 Yards
The second hole is a drivable par 4 at only 303 yards. But golfers will not be able to chase a low running ball up the green as a large hummock protects the front of the green, and a series of 4 deep bunkers protects the back. The best miss is to the left of the green leaving you a short pitch or chip to the flag
Hole 3: Par 3 221 yards
The 3rd hole is a long par 3 playing at 221 yards but plays 15 to 20 feet downhill to the shared green complex of hole number 1. Two deep bunkers protect the front of the green, while a large drop off and deep bunker will catch wayward shots to the left. If the wind is blowing off the bay, a good fade with the wind will help evade the bunkers and drop offs.
Hole 4: Par 4 424 yards.
This medium length par 4 plays down hill and back towards the club house. Off of the tips Bay Creek comes back into play as it lies 285 yards from the tee. If the wind is at your back you should have no problem clearing the creek, but a lay up would be wise for the shorter hitters. If you clear the creek a short pitch up the green awaits you, but depending on what tier the pin is on could make for a difficult birdie putt
Hole 5: Par 4 364 yards
A short par 4 but don’t get complacent. Bay Creek runs parallel to the fairway, anything right will be wet. Anything left will be in the hummocks that separate hole 5 and hole 7. The green is guarded by 3 bunkers in the front and one to the right. If you hit the fairway you will have a short pitch to the green, but this green is a tricky one to navigate as it is filled with bumps and run offs
Hole 6: Par 4 371 yards
Playing opposite of hole 5 hole 6 is another short par 4 that could cause trouble. Driver off the tee here will lead to a very narrow landing area with bunkers and hummocks on the right and beach on the left. The green slopes from back to front and protected by bunkers on each side.
Hole 7: Par 5 551 yards
Hole 7 brings us to our first par 5 of the day. Your tee shot will have to navigate three bunkers 280 yards out, but a shared fairway with the 4th hole should leave you some extra room for landing. Your approach leaves you with two options. Long iron or hybrid to lay up and leave a short pitch in, or 5 wood or 3 wood and take on the tucked green within the few trees on the course. If you take on the green it will be better to be long than short as short will leave you in the hummocks protecting this tucked green. The green is very bumpy so an accurate approach is key.
Hole 8: Par 3 121 yards
The shortest hole on the golf course and perhaps one of my favorites. An accurate wedge over the water should find this small sloping green surrounded bu small hummocks. Tried to take some inspiration from the famous Postage Stamp at Royal Troon.
Hole 9: Par 5 603 yards
The shortest hole on the course is followed by the longest. A well placed tee shot is required here to navigate the deep fairway bunkers surrounding the landing area. While the approach to the green is down hill you will need a pretty strong tail wind to clear Bay Creek and reach the green in 2. Best to play up short of the creek to have a short pitch to the green. Or you could throw caution to the wind and go driver off the deck and test your luck. But beware of the 4 bunkers that surround the green and OB situated beyond the green.
Hole 10: Par 5 524 yards
As we make the turn we begin just how we ended the front with a Par 5. This one considerably shorter at only 524 yards, but a narrow landing area could make it hard to hit in 2. You could get lucky though as anything hit to gar left could end you up in the 18th fairway while too far right and you will end up in the 9th fairway. From the fairway a 3 or 5 wood should give you a good look into the green as this greens only protection are bunkers long. Good opportunity for an eagle here.
Hole 11: Par 3 261 yards
Hole 11 plays to a green complex located next to the short hole 8 par 3, however the 11th plays much different. Although playing downhill, a long fairway wood or driver if the wind is really blowing off the south or south west will be need here to clear the pond which protects the green.
Hole 12: Par 4 378 yards
The 12th hole is a short dog leg right heading back towards the sea and its prevailing winds. Trying to cut the corner will find you flirting with the trees, so a 3 wood or fade with the driver to the middle of the fairway should leave you with a gap wedge or less into the green. The green is protected by 4 bunkers and sloped from left to right
Hole 13: Par 4 314 yards
The 13th hole is a short reachable par 4. But strong winds from the coast could make this green hard to hit in one. This green complex shares itself to the 15th hole and is shielded amongst two hummocks on the left and right. Be aware of anything to far right as just beyond the hummocks is a power station and our of bounds.
Hole 14: Par 4 400 yards
Hole 14 is a straight away par 4 with bunkers up the left to catch any errant tee shots. The green is a figure eight shape with bunkers on either side. Don’t miss the green as wayward shots will find the tall grass of the mounds and hummocks surrounding the green.
Hole 15: Par 4 511 yards
The 15th par 4 is a shallow dog leg right and only two yards shorter than the 10th hole par 5. Wind speed and direction will again come into play here as you share a fairway with the 14th hole, unless you want to risk the trees and try to cut the corner. Depending on wind you will most likely had a mid iron to 3 wood on your approach to the shared green that you just came off of two holes ago.
Hole 16: Par 5 598 yards
This long par 5 is straight away back up the 15th and parallel to the 14th. Plenty of fairway awaits your tee shot on the left, but plenty of out of bounds awaits you on the right, along with the possibility of broken windows. Your approach with require a carry of a large hummock sitting 50 yards short of the green in the middle of the fairway. The green is fairly fiat however there are large drop offs on all sides. Again do not go right or long as you approach the green or you will find yourself on city property and not a golf course.
Hole 17: Par 3 227 yards
The 17th hole is a long straight away par 3 playing slightly down hill. The green is protected by 4 bunkers in the front and OB all along the right side. The 17th is one of the few isolated holes on the course where you don’t have a view of the surrounding holes.
Hole 18: Par 4 478 yards
The closing hole is a long par 4 running back parallel to the 10th hole towards bay creek. The landing area consists of two bunkers run the fairway and three bunkers just off your right, Finding the fairway should leave you with a wedge over the creek into a green surrounded by 5 deep bunkers that runs off on all sides. All this green is fairly big don’t add too much spin to your shot or making birdie will be a challenge,
