I avoid it like the plague. If I cant get to the green off the tee I lay up to less than 100yds. A habit I picked up playing TW games for so many years. I hate pitch shots.

Executing a putt feels different than a normal shot. Executing a pitch shot feels more like executing a putt than executing a normal shot because it requires more finesse. What makes a pitch shot even more difficult and different than putting is that tempo meter is an extra layer of mechanical execution that one needs to manage.
I don't necessarily think that the pitch shot is broken, but it doesn't feel as consistent as other shot types due the nature of the shot and the distances that you would use a pitch shot from. It's easier to execute a partial normal shot at longer ranges, and full flops and splash shots from shorter ranges.
With all that said, I think it is possible that one way to resolve the "issue with pitch shots" is that there be a serperate tempo calibration option for each shot type. Just a thought.

I think you just really need to hit the range or a test course and get used to how the pitch shot behaves. It can be hard to hit perfect, so knowing both how to hit fast or slow as well as what results to expect are needed to make it a consistently viable shot. I know I used to avoid pitch shots at all costs, but in the past month or two have really come around to them by getting used to distances and behaviors. Most of it is pretty straight forward - fast = more distance, slow = less distance. One thing that I've noticed that is inconsistent - shot distance is not reduced as much as expected out of heavy rough lies. Initially that will make it harder to figure out of heavy rough, but once you get used to it, it's a definite advantage.

I'm not one hundred percent certain on this but I think that the lie percentage you are given is tied into your tempo. I.e. if the percentage is 75-85% and you hit perfect tempo (at 100% power) you will be granted 85% penalty. The further you move away from perfect the percentage granted is reduced, proportionate to the range offered. Add to that, one might be shooting at 101%, and likely mitigating the reduced lie percentage distance penalty for being less perfect, for example.

My 2 cents worth... having not played TGC19 I can't comment on whether the pitch shot is broken or not but what I will say is I quite enjoy the challenge of getting the pitch right. When I do it's very satisfying! My tip for pitching is always have a few practice shots first to find the "white zone". Once some basic allowances have been made for fairway slope but mostly elevation, and green contours, it's just a memory of practice swing timing thing. IMO the chip shot lacks this required finesse and really boils down to what club to select and hit 100% and allow roll out. When I'm in between I use a little backspin to stop if a bit quicker but hey just like IRL there's always many factors that influence the reaction of the ball. I enjoy the pitch and chip shot. I only use splash from sand and find this is far more frustrating than a pitch. Seems to be fare more variable IMO. And I dont use flop. No idea why just haven't practiced it and find i get good results with pitch anyway. Just wish HB would prevent splash from anywhere but bunkers. This is after all a shot designed for bunkers. I hit a “splash” quite often in real golf from green side 10 yards and in. Not sure why you’d want to ban it, being that it’s absolutely possible in real golf, it is just far too easy to hit it perfect.

Love to see someone that plays the same way I do! I also don’t use splash unless in the sand and it has added sooooooo much interest to the game from inside 100 yards! Makes me feel like I’m much more reliant on my “touch” when close to the green. Much more realistic! No judgment of course meant towards players that use the splash regularly but I’d strongly recommend trying playing without it. It’s super fun!

It’s super fun! agreed there's no judgement. couldn't care less if players play the red fast or use the splash outside of bunkers. I play how I want to play for pure enjoyment. I've found my niche and happy in my little bubble for the time being. Would like to play the CC Tours but I just cant get the Master swing sorted. Maybe I just need to persist and accept poorer scoring until I recalibrate and improve again. And... splash = bunker flop = around the green IMO Each to their own!

Used to be a pitch shot hater and it can still be frustrating but man when you get the hang of it....it is money! Only problem I have now is realizing sometimes that is the shot it is giving me which ruins my tempo if I am not expecting it. I mean why would the game give me a 100 yard pitch shot with a 8 iron when I can hit a full 95 yard wedge? Always hit the pitch 100% though would be by tip.

Sometimes the short iron pitch is the better option! Especially in high winds or if you have some room to land a pitch and run it up to the hole. I consider that type of shot to be the game’s version of a “knock-down” shot. It’s really effective once you get the hang of it (at least for me😉). I totally understand the frustration though when your not expecting it!

Wish in the next game it would have a different color on the swing type or something to show you it changed. I know I know I’m lazy and don’t look at what it’s saying before i shoot. Lol
